I am working on this surface studio computer that seems dead from a possible lightning strike.  I removed the 1 tb hard drive and hooked it to my desktop with a usb adapter.  I hear the audible sound of usb entrance and hear the hd running, but get no indication in file explorer and drive letter...I went to computer management, storage, and it does not show up as well....Does that mean it is dead???

Sounds like it.  Does it show in Device Manager?

hit Enter

 

Click on the arrow in front of Hard Drives.  Do you see it?  If so, right click on it and select Properties.  Does it say: This device is working properly.?

 

Are you sure the adapter is good?  Some of them need an extra USB connection to provide enough power for the drive.  Can you try another drive just to make sure the adapter works?

 

If you have to replace the drive you can download a copy of Win 10 to reinstall with:

https://www.microsof...nload/windows10

and load it on a USB drive.

Go back into Device Manager and find your drive again and right click and hit Properties then Details.  Change Device Description to Hardware IDs

Right click in the bottom panel and select Select All then Copy.  Move to a Reply and Paste (ctrl +v).

 

Should look something like:

Sometimes it helps to just right click on the drive and Uninstall then reboot and let it find it again.  If you View, Show Devices by Connection you will see what USB Mass Storage Device it is attached to.  Verify in the properties that it is not unhappy and also try Uninstall and reboot.

Sort of strange what you are getting.  The info I posted earlier was from my USB connected hard drive dock so I thought it might be different from the cheaper USB adapter.  I dug up one I paid $7 for and tried it and I get:

The difference appears to be the numbers after the underscores at the end of the lines but it says they are just revision numbers so no help but it does appear that this could be a valid way to interface a hard drive tho I would feel better if your adapter worked the same way mine does.

 

The C:\Windows\inf\usbstor.inf file tells Windows what to do with the drive.  Most likely the file is OK but it wouldn't hurt to check that you can open it with notepad and that it doesn't have any strange characters in it.  The .inf file is compiled into another file called C:\Windows\inf\usbstor.PNF

Sometimes these get messed up.  These can be deleted and will be recompiled after a reboot.

 

The inf file calls for a driver file called: usbstor.sys which is located in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\usbstor.sys

 

You can check the file in an elevated Command Prompt

 

Open an Elevated Command Prompt:

Win 7: Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator

I really don't understand the process. File explorer does not see it nor does computer management or disc management...I only get the audible sound when I plug it in...your instructions are precise but hard for me to follow with my limited experience...

No sign of the Seagate drive so it's no wonder Windows doesn't see it.  Either the drive is really sick or the adapter is no good.

 

If the adapter is working you may be able to recover some data with one of these:
