Problem with your Speccy url again I`m afraid.

Any improvement in performance is down to getting rid of McAfee.

I am baffled by this url thing!

When I clicked just now on my first posting of my first Speccy snapshot yesterday, it didn't work.

When I clicked just now on my second posting of my first Speccy snapshot yesterday, it DID work.

When just now I clicked on my posting earlier today of the second Speccy snapshot, it didn't work.

When I click on the url at the top of this comment, nothing happens, presumably  because it is not yet formated as a link

I shall now POST this comment and then see if the url works.

Experimenting a bit.

Oh, the url still does not work. Shall try various things – but at least I can see for myself that I have not yet posted a second snapshot url that works!

Both of the urls I posted in the comment immediately before this one worked for me.

Still baffled!

McAfee is still shown to be the AV and no Windows updates have been installed at all.

Can you try running the McAfee removal tool again, restart the computer once done, run Speccy for yourself to see if McAfee has gone, if it has, make sure that Windows Defender has enabled, updated and then run a scan of the computer.

If McAfee is still present, post back and let us know.

No rush with this on my behalf as I have a wedding to attend today.

Hi Phill

I hope you enjoyed the wedding.

A lot has happened since my last post.

I tried very hard – spent hours and hours – trying to follow your instructions. Went through the procedure to remove McAfee (in several different ways) again and again and also tried to update Windows  – watched the screen as it said "Configuring updates 20%" etc, and did three or four Speccy snapshots. But I was getting nowhere. At one point I did see that Defender had been enabled, but always the snapshot showed that the updates were not configured and the word "McAfee" always seemed to appear more than once.

I was pretty downhearted. then I came across the idea of resetting the computer and downloading Windows again and I decided to do this. It finished overnight and today I have been reinstalling things.

All seems to be well – except that McAfee is still alive and well in the computer! I kept noticing the word as I was doing something – can't remember what – and then I downloaded Speccy and did a snapshot again and McAfee is still definitely there! (I will post the url in this post and, if it seems necessary, in another post straight afterwards). But I have just looked at the Security in Settings and it looks as if Microsoft intends McAfee to be there. (See attached screenshot.)

Oh! Geeks to Go won't let me attach a screenshot – well, it is a screenshot pasted into a Word document. (Is there any other way I can transfer a screenshot from another computer to this website except the way I did it, emailing it from one computer to the other?)

What it shows is that the several references to McAfee  in are in blue writing in Settings > Windows Security in the newly downloaded copy of Windows 10.

Hello Sue,

A long but good day and thank you for asking  :)

Sorry to see that you have been getting the run around with this, was home all day yesterday and would have been around to help had you post, by the by now though and lets see if we can help any.

I was pretty downhearted. then I came across the idea of resetting the computer and downloading Windows again and I decided to do this.

If you did a reset and McAfee came preinstalled on the computer by HP unless you choose the keep nothing option any pre installed apps get reinstalled along with Windows.

Regarding Windows updates, rely on what it says in the Windows update history, if it shows updates have been installed and says up to date trust that information.

Question, when you did the Windows reset, can you recall what option you chose.

I can't remember exactly what the options were when I did the Windows reset, but (1) I did know we were trying to get rid of something so I think whatever I chose will have implied that everything I had individually installed myself would be removed. Indeed, I do remember that it said a list of what had been removed would be available for reference on the Desktop –  and here is the list:

Apps removed while resetting your PC
App name Publisher Version   BBCiPlayerDownloads British Broadcasting Corporation 2.8.3 Driver Support PC Drivers HeadQuarters LP 10.1.4.86 Dropbox Dropbox, Inc. 128.4.2870 Google Chrome Google LLC 92.0.4515.131 HP Touchpoint Analytics Client HP Inc. 4.0.2.1439 iCloud Outlook Apple Inc. 12.2.0.10 Intel® PROSet/Wireless Software Intel Corporation 20.90.0 LibreOffice 6.2.0.3 The Document Foundation 6.2.0.3 Microsoft 365 - en-us Microsoft Corporation 16.0.14228.20226 Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime Microsoft Corporation 92.0.902.67 Microsoft Office Standard Edition 2003 Microsoft Corporation 11.0.5614.0 Microsoft OneDrive Microsoft Corporation 21.139.0711.0001 Microsoft Update Health Tools Microsoft Corporation 2.81.0.0 Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x64) - 14.0.24215 Microsoft Corporation 14.0.24215.1 Speccy Piriform 1.32 Vulkan Run Time Libraries 1.0.42.0 LunarG, Inc. 1.0.42.0 Windows 10 Update Assistant Microsoft Corporation 1.4.9200.22514 Windows Setup Remediations (x64) (KB4023057)     Zoom Zoom Video Communications, Inc.

5.5.2 (12494.0204)

I remember being disappointed that the word "McAfee" was nowhere to be seen!

I will try to get into a routine of checking that updates about once a week.

Glad you had a good day on Friday.

Looks like McAfee did come preinstalled on the computer then and is most likely a trial version.

Two options, if the computer is still working much better, leave McAfee as the AV or try again to get rid of it, because it is a clean install it can be uninstalled via the Windows Control Panel, some info on preloaded McAfee and how to get rid of it explained here.

Thanks  :)

Thank you so much for all your help and encouragement, Phill.

As the computer is working so much better (and I have other things to do!) I think I will leave well alone for the time being. But I have made a note of what you say in you last post and of the url https://proprivacy.c...ivirus-softwareso that I will be prepared if things go wrong again.

I will mark that my problem has been solved, even though exactly how this has happened isn't clear.

But it is terrific to have someone be as consistently and authoritatively supportive as you have been. thank you.
