Mail looking quite different

The first attachment is a screenshot (09.50.32) from an Apple support page https://support.appl...elcome/13.0/mac

The second is a screenshot (09.58.48) of what my Mail looks like now

This has happened in the last few days.

It is possible that I caused this change while I was fiddling about (with Mail’s View menu or Mail > Preferences > Viewing) in an attempt to deal with another change. It used to be the case that I could move around between the apps I use most often (Mail, Word and Safari/*Chrome) easily. But somehow this switching is no longer so easy now, and I often seem to need to actively minimize one app before I can access another.

Also (or is this part of one of the two things I have already described?) when I switch to (already opened) Mail from, eg, Word, sometimes I have to make a viewing window appear via the menu, because only an opened message appears and not a mailbox list as well. (Sod’s Law means that I can’t reproduce that at the moment to check!)

(*I have fairly recently changed my default browser from Safari to Chrome, though (1) I still use Safari sometimes and (2) I don’t think there is a correlation between changing this default and the issue I am describing.)

I have had this MacBook for a couple of years and have got on very well with it for the most part. Why should this change in the appearance and functioning of MacMail have happened now? And, more importantly, can I get back to how things used to be?

I really hate how Mail looks now and so much wish I could make it look as it does in the Support screenshot.

(I am still using Catalina.)
