Hi

was given an older Toshiba Satellite C50-A-157 laptop by a lady who wants to give it to her great granddaughter for school work. Tried twice to install windows 10 and installation fails. Just doing an upgrade using this option from microsoft site  "create windows 10 installation media, download, then run it" . I wanted to make sure it installed and activated okay, before I purchase a SSD and do a clean install. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hello bytesize,

Not unusual and is Windows saying that you need to do a clean install of Windows 10.

Make sure that you save any Toshiba system drivers to a separate thumbdrive before installing Windows 10.

Use the second option here to create a Windows 10 ISO then do a clean install, once done, install the chipset drivers for the MB before allowing Windows 10 to install any updates.

Being that the computer has been running Windows 8.1 you should not be asked to enter any product key, Microsoft already has that information on their database, if asked, tick the don`t have key option and continue.
