Hi all,

 

I have a small business that has a web domain and related email accounts as well as a subsription for Office 365. This has all been set up for me by a local computer shop.

 

I've decided that I no longer want to pay the monthly Office 365 subscription, I'd rather just buy an office licence or better still, run it all through Linux software (if that's possible).

 

Firstly, before I cancel the Office 365 subscription, is there a way (assuming I continue to pay for the domain name) of accessing the existing email accounts outside of the Office 365 set up?

 

If I have a computer that has outlook that is outside of the 365 subscription, could I use that to access the emails? Or better still, is there Linux software that will do this?

Thunderbird makes a good substitute for Outlook.

I've set up Thunderbird and Open office and they access my Microsoft documents.

 

It's probably not quite up to date with all of the Excel functions but it's pretty good.

 

One question, I had to set up Thunderbird so that it accessed my emails via Microsoft. Does that mean that if I get rid of Office, I lose access to my emails?

If your email address after the "@" does not belong to Microsoft you should be able to access new emails from Thunderbird.  Even if it does there is usually a way to access the Microsoft server from Thunderbird.

It would depend on the terms of service of your email  provider but most do not require that you maintain an active Office account.

 

 

 

To get access to your old stored emails just have Outlook Export them to a file then import the file into Thunderbird.
