Quite some years ago I acquired this used device; I believe I checked it out but had no use for it then so put it away. I recently rediscovered it and think it would be good for storing lots of Game Camera pictures that currently are clogging my computer. Hooking it directly to my computer via Ethernet cable, or to the Arris  BGW210/700 Modem/Router both have no effect; the unit isn't automatically recognized.  Some online instructions I found say I need to download software, but this old unit is no longer supported. I don't know a password, if there's one, and haven't tried resetting the unit either. FWIW, I don't use Wi-Fi, only cable connections.

Is there some way I can get this to connect with my system and use it for storage? Any assistance would be appreciated.

I may have scanned it for malware when first found, but would want to do so again, once accessible.

Thanks

Yes and no; the site has some of the same information I had earlier, including links to the User's Manual (links therein are dead), but elsewhere it did have a download link that worked for the setup file which I saved and later Ran as an Administrator. I had the My Book connected using a standard Ethernet cable, and properly powered, the Link LED steady (but the activity LED blinking, even after waiting 20 minutes). However, the program was unable to find the unit in my system. Because support has stopped, the Help link in the Setup window also does nothing.

Would you recommend my pushing the unit's Reset button and trying again?

If you don't care about whatever might be on it, might as well.

I wonder if it is an OS issue. This worked on 7, vista, and XP.

See if this will help https://community.wd...lorer/140970/12

I'm still running Windows 7 on my computer, so that isn't the problem. I did the reset and retried letting Setup search for the unit, again unsuccessfully.

Yesterday my car wouldn't start and after a bit of diagnosis, I walked home (about 5 miles). Got a ride back with some more tools and have determined I have no spark, but will need to make some special connections to access the ignition system or ECU, plus need to finish painting a condominium, so won't have much time to play with this for a week or two. It's what makes life always interesting.

Well, I got so tied up with other work that it's taken me until now to get back to this. I assume I did it, but I don't know why this problem was marked as "solved" when it isn't.

I have tried using "Computer > Map network" with the drive not being found; it doesn't show up on Device Manager or on Network or Sharing Center, whether hooked directly to the computer or to the connected modem. I do hear the disc start spinning when it's energized and the green LED flashes or remains on, depending.

Is there anything else I can try to get the my system to recognize this device? I don't have computer one to try, and am pretty sure the Ethernet cable is OK.

Sounds like the hard drive is shot. You could remove it from the case and connect directly connect it to a SATA port in a computer or get a powered 3.5" SATA-to-USB adapter (~$15 to $20 USD) and try accessing it that way. If the drive itself is still good, then you know the electronics in the My Book are no good. However, if they are still good and the old HDD is dead (they do wear out), simply replace it with another good HDD. Like so:

Oh, if the hard drive is dead and you "gotta have" what's on it, try Ontrack[/u]. (Note that this can get expen$ive). But, if anyone can get the data for you, they can. How Ontrack recovered data from the Columbia space shuttle disaster
