Recently I got an email from source I deal with stating I had an invoice.  I opened it but it was unreadable. I replied to ask what it was about. I was told the email account had been hacked and to delete the email. I was annoyed that I had opened it already.

Nothing happened for a couple of weeks.  Then my PC turned itself on last evening and the initial picture was different. My desktop picture was gone altogether and some files had disappeared. I reloaded them from a backup hard drive but they disappear after each reboot and the n all files were gone!. Some programs like Zoom keep disappearing & Google acts like I've just installed it when I open it after I reboot. Windows mail has also disappeared.

Did I download a virus from the email or was that a coincidence? I followed your advice about how to do a scan. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Note that recently several anti-virus programs have started "eating" FRST so pause your anti-virus while downloading or running FRST.

Thank you for that. I got up at 4am, turned on the computer and at the sign in stage, I hit the shift button several times. I restarted it and all was back to normal. As I'm at the opposite side of the world to most of you, I went back to bed, got up and started it again to see if the 'fix' had worked and it's still good. I may have ended up in a temporary profile and this jolted it back. I'm not sure why it happened or how it was 'fixed' but if it remains OK for the next few days, I assume it's now OK. I hate having pc issues as I use it a lot and my knowledge of the systems inside them is limited. I appreciate sites like this.

It seems to have settled down and has been going OK so hopefully all sorted. I appreciate the site and the opportunity to come here with PC issues.
