Four yrs ago, I set up a Win 10 Laptop for a friend. I uninstalled McAfee during the setup (I thought I did!)

 

My friend contacted me a few days ago. Her Laptop was complaining that there was only 19 Megabytes available on her 256 Gb SSD drive.

 

Tree-size Free found a McAfee Directory in C:\Program Data that was 179 Gb!  I checked Control Panel, McAfee is not installed on the Laptop. I deleted the Directory in C:\Program Data, and Windows was much happier.

 

Checking further, Task Manager tells me that McAfee Web Advisor is running on the Laptop. It is loaded from a McAfee directory in C:\Program files. Also, I find that the directory has reappeared in C:\Program Data, and is growing mushrooms in the basement again.

 

Not the first time I have found McAfee coming back like a Zombie. I uninstalled it in 2019 and the Laptop is doing fine with Windows Security.

 

I don't need any F@#%^#@ Web advice from #$%^%^& McAfee!

 

I don't find any option to uninstall McAfee Web Advisor. Would it be safe to delete the McAfee Directory in C:\Program Files if I start the Laptop in Safe Mode?

 

Will McAfee come back to haunt me again if I do that?

 

Any advice would be appreciated.

I had forgotten about McAffe's Product Removal Tool.

 

I should have known that McAffee never goes away just because I uninstalled the program.

Hello. I am in the same situation concerning McAfee.  I ran the "McFee Consumer Product Removal Tool."  Bu I eventually get this:  "Windows cannot verify the digital signature for this file.  A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from a unknown source."  Thoughts?  Thanks...

Download the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool

Using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
· Double click the MCPR.exe
· A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically.
· Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. Note: Do not double-click MCPR.exe again, you may have to wait up to 1 minute for the next window to appear.
· After the second window appears, the program will begin the cleanup.
· Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window: The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
· Press Y on the keyboard.
· Wait for the computer to restart.
· All McAfee products are now removed from your computer.
