Hi Geeks:

Having problem booting up Zorin on my Clevo N141ZU.

The computer will not start on the battery. It must be plugged in and on boot up, I get "CMOS Message" on start-up: "A first boot or NVRAM reset condition has been detected."

Checking on line, I'm directed to the PCI screen in BIOS Set Up but I don't see PCI listed.

The CMOS battery was changed and the clock holds time and date but the computer still does not boot up properly.

Please, any ideas for me? Any systems' checks or repair functions I should run?

The link has some good information but I'm on the road right now and don't have my original live stick version of Zorin 15. Next week I'll give this a try.

As far as resetting Defaults:

Pressing F2 on boot brings up the Bio Settings in which there are five sub-menus: Continue, Boot Manager, Boot from File, Administer Secure, and Setup Utility.

Disregarding Continue, Boot Manager has three sub-menus, the last being selected. The arrow keys don't work and I can't move up to Boot Option Menu or EFI Boot Devices. Boot from File has no default. In Administer Secure, I enabled Restore to Factory Settings and saved. I opened the other items in the sub-menu and pressed F9 to restore the default and then F10 to save. Did the same for Setup Utility.

Unfortunately this did nothing to improve my situation. Any further ideas would be appreciated.

I used my Zorin 15 live stick to boot the computer and followed the repair instructions as outlined in the Zorin Help link. Unfortunately it did nothing to solve my problem. I have to boot while plugged in and get the CMOS error message: "A first boot or NVRAM reset condition has been detected."

Would appreciate further help or suggestions.

Hate to say it but I think Motherboard is faulty.

Bios happens before any os loads.

So new battery and defaults does not leave room for much else.

I am always reluctant to advise on a bios update as you could end up with a door stop if not done correctly

But it is not working now so it can't hurt.

I have found the same problem and they tried 3 bios updates to no effect.

When was the last time that the computer functioned correctly and what operating system was running at the time.

Hey phillpower... good to hear from you again. Still playing football?

Yes, the problem came out of nowhere. I started the computer one morning, on the boat, and got the message in the attachment.

The computer is four years old and I figured the CMOS battery had died. I couldn't get a replacement here in the Dominican Republic, so continued to use the computer for a month until I could get to the City for a battery replacement.

The new CMOS battery didn't help. The computer will not start on the main battery. Plugged in, I get "CMOS Message" on start-up and then the OS wants to check the disc before continuing. After that, it works fine on the battery but I've had a few "crashes" since the problem started. Time and date are correct.

Sure hope it's not the motherboard as peterm suggests it might be.

Any suggestions would be, as always, much appreciated.

Not played this season as the old bones are starting to grumble 

 

Any chance that you could take a picture of the CMOS battery in the MB and then upload it for us, the schematics I have for the MB does not show a battery holder on the top or the bottom of the MB.

 

Can you also let us know how many sticks of RAM you have.

Give the below a try; 

 

Power down the notebook and disconnect the AC adaptor from the notebook.

 

Press the power on button for twenty or so seconds to get rid of any residual current in the charging circuit.

 

Remove the keyboard.

 

Remove the main (!9V) battery.

 

Again press the power on button for twenty or so seconds.

 

Remove the RAM.

 

Leave the computer in this state overnight.

My bones started to grumble 10 years ago. Buck up :-)

Here is a photo downloaded from a website video showing the CMOS in the upper right. This is not my computer, but the same make and model and I send it with the intent of a speedy reply. I can photograph my own computer when I get it apart.

I have 32 gigs of RAM installed.

No matter, just add removing the CMOS battery overnight as well.
