Hi

I am not sure if this is the right place to ask for help with my screen.  I have a HP Laptop and the screen image/text intermittently blinks on and off.  I have found that by turning the laptop off and restarting it that the situation resolves (at least temporarily).   However, I know something is not right and would greatly appreciate any help you may offer.

Many thanks,

Kris

Hello krissounete,

Try connecting the notebook up to an external screen using the appropriate video ports.

You may need to toggle between displays using the Fn and the F5 keys or similar.

Let us know if the behaviour is the same.

Hi GloMo,

Thank you for your response!  I did as you suggested and discovered there is no issue when I use an external screen.  I notice that the blinking on/off of my laptop screen begins once I move the cursor.  I greatly appreciate any more help you may provide.

Thank you,

Kris

The fact that the issue is not replicated on the external screen and that it only happens on the notebooks screen could be a couple of things, a loose video ribbon/cable from the MB to screen, some other cable/ribbon has come loose, this includes the trackpad and keyboard ribbons and looking less likely since your update a problem with the screen itself.

Suggest if not tried already and using just the notebook screen;

Using a USB mouse, does the issue occur.

Using a USB keyboard, does the issue occur.

You are welcome btw  :)

Hi GloMo,

Thank you for your suggestions.  I tried using a USB mouse but that didn't help the issue with the blinking on/off screen.  I haven't tried the USB keyboard yet, but will do so tomorrow.

I think it's awesome that you provide this community service.  I've only had this HP laptop for 2 1/2 years, but I'm pretty sure that if I take it to any computer repair shop near me, they'll just say to buy a new one.

Fingers crossed,

Kris

Hello Kris,

If the issue still happens when using an external USB keyboard it goes some way towards suggesting that the video cable/ribbon is either loose or damaged, this can happen through nothing more than every day use but it is more likely to happen when the notebook lid gets opened too far.

Please note that it is important that you do not touch the trackpad or notebook keypad when you are testing using a USB keyboard or mouse.

You are welcome but hold off on taking the computer anywhere until you have tried what was advised in my reply #6 and paying particular attention to the below;

Please note that it is important that you do not touch the trackpad or notebook keypad when you are testing using a USB keyboard or mouse.
