I've been using Office XP on my Windows 10 computer for years with no problem, but today Word, Excel, and Powerpoint start for a few seconds then immediately shut down.  I tried re-starting computer, starting in safe mode, uninstalling and re-installing Office, all with no change to the behavior.  I have another desktop (same model & configuration) also running Office XP, and Word, Excel, and Powewrpoint all still work fine on it!  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Other older versions (Office 2000, XP, 2003) are not supported but may still work in compatibility mode.

 

Have you checked that it's actually running in compatibility mode?  I am not familiar with compatibility mode and was wondering if you can toggle it on and off, if possible try it.

I never had to use compatibility mode before, it just worked on both of my desktops!  It still works on the same model desktop downstairs.  I get a message, "Word automatically saved changes to the normal document template.  Do you want to load it?"  Whether I answer yes or no, word starts, a small blue circle spins, small circle gets a little bigger, then it shuts down.  Same thing every time.  No messages with Excel or Powerpoint, they just start, small circle routine, then shut down.

 

So I did try compatibility mode; same problem.

What is really confusing is I have the same program on the same model computer downstairs & it is still working fine!

All it takes is one registry glitch to muck things up, would it be worth doing a repair on office xp if that option is available, look in the programs list and click on office xp. see if a repair option shows up, never know, and I understand you reinstalled it, I would still try the repair  office xp if available.

Sorry, I DID do the repair option for Office XP and that did nothing (actually tried it twice).

open a command prompt right click it and choose run as administrator

To open a command prompt
You can either right-click the Windows start button in the lower-left hand corner of the screen or press Windows key + X to open the Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin).

copy and paste the following in
dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth
Hit enter

 

Then
run this too from a command prompt
type SFC /scannow into the command propmt window or just copy and paste it in.

If windows finds errors reboot and run it again.

Not sure why what's  going on, but It might be time to think about more up to date office program.

 

While there's certainly no law against it, the problem with using unsupported software is that there are no official solutions when it doesn't work properly (or at all) so you're on your own to find a solution, if a solution exists.
