A friend of mine has a picture of a speaker with an X which is on top of her icons that she can't remove.

We have tried everything to get id of it but nothing works.

It can't be moved or interacted with in any way.

We think it is a thumbnail or image but have no idea what it is supposed to do.

Can anyone help?

Can you upload a picture of that to which you refer.

Question, is your friend aware that Windows 8.1 is no longer supported and is therefore vulnerable to malware attack.

She is a pastor and doesn't do much on the internet.

It is just a picture of a speaker with a red X on the top left corner.

When she hides the icons it stays on the screen.

She is at her church right now, I will try to upload an image of her desktop as soon as I can get it.

It sounds like it is something that got left behind when something got uninstalled.

Can you ask your friend;

How long has the icon been there and was anything installed or uninstalled just previous to the icon first appearing.

She doesn't remember, it has been annoying her for months, maybe a year.

Need the picture now, someone may recognise the icon and whatever program it is associated with.

Is the computer a custom build or brand name such as Dell or HP, if a brand name, provide the model name or series number (not serial) for us.

It is a Dell T3500 with 16GB and a 4 core Xeon CPU.

I attached the picture, hope I did it right.

Hi,

That icon could be an indication that the sound is mute on the monitor itself!

The pic is right and we can tell by looking at it that the icon is not Windows related.

Is there a Dell screen attached to the PC or is it another brand, as has been suggested the icon could be to do with the monitor.

Observation, this computer did not ship with Windows 8 and so has been upgraded from Windows 7, this means that the icon could even be from the previous OS.

Well, just finished troubleshooting with the pastor.

It turns out it is the monitor, a 32inch Proscan to be exact.

She has 2 monitors (tv's actually) and she neglected to tell me the image always stayed on the Proscan.

When she presses a green button on the remote, it goes away but comes back right away.
