Asus 1025c(still) on Windows 7

1)I've an issue with half my screen blacking out and now have a wedge of paper between the casing to stop it happening. It displays fine on an external monitor so I'm going to take out and reconnect the display cable in the laptop. Then replace it further down the line if it continues. I reckon it's the cable, but if I press down on the bottom of the border of the screen it stops. Around where the connection is, but also probably the screens internal cables.

My question is. Why does only half the screen(on the right) black out?

2)My SD slot stopped working a while ago so I'm going to swap it like for like. It's a sub-board maybe containing the headphone jack and some USB ports.

My Question is. Does changing this sub-board count as a hardware change for the OS meaning I need to take care of that side of it.
