Hi there

I hope someone can help.

Yes I know its old and unsupported but runs well and does all I need and I don't want nor am able to replace it.

Windows is corrupt so at the least you may need need Windows 7 media so that you can do a repair installation, do you have a Windows 7 DVD.

While we look at the Speccy report, one thing I will suggest is that you change the Windows Power Plan to Balanced, Ultra and High Performance are a form of overclocking that is known to cause stability and overheating issues, it is particularly bad if you have an old/weak PSU.

Edit to add: You have a lot of storage devices hooked up there, can you post the brand and model name or number of the PSU so that we can check that it is good and new enough to support all of your hardware.

Hi,

Error: (08/07/2024 01:29:53 PM) (Source: Microsoft-Windows-User Profiles Service) (EventID: 1542) (User: NT AUTHORITY)
Description: Windows cannot load classes registry file.
 DETAIL - Unspecified error

This means that part of your user registry is corrupt or missing!

Try to create another user, add the new user to the Administrators group and login with it to see if the error is gone on the new user.

Hi, many thanks.

I used the hidden windows account to log in and can confirm the error has gone.

I then switched back to my normal account and it's back.

Question? which bit of the registry is damaged, can I use one of the many registry backups I have to repair it?

Looking at event viewer and warnings leading up to the error I see: C4PRG BrtC4PRG: [2024/08/08 11:04:30.389]: [00009876]: RegOpenKeyEx failed this from my printer driver that's not connected.

Also I see The content source <csc://{S-1-5-21-989875291-3784188841-2934234737-500}/> cannot be accessed.

Context:  Application, SystemIndex Catalog

Details:
(HRESULT : 0x80004005) (0x80004005) from 'Gatherer'

Would Teaking.com windows repair fix my issues?

Oddly the computer started up really quickly on both accounts today.

Cheers

Not the best of PSUs even when new but it is most unlikely to be the cause or your registry corruption, please follow the above of SleepyDude.

The file that is missing or corrupted resides on this location:

C:\Users\<your_user_account>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat

If you have a backup of this UsrClass.dat file for your user then you can replace the file with a good copy, make sure it its from your user or it will not work!

If you don't have a backup of this file, in my opinion the best curse of action is to stop using the old account and move your files (only documents, pictures, videos, etc.) from the old account to the new one.

Thanks very much, so not a registry error then. Looking in that location I see I already have a UsrClass.dat.old file so it must have been replaced before. I have a copy from May 2024 so will that be ok? Only issue now is replacing it because the system has it open. Assume I can log in from the admin account to do it?

Hi,

Could the backup also be corrupt?

Can you zip the file and upload the zip to sharing site for example www.sendspace.com

Thanks, well back in May 24 there were not these issues. Oddly the profile starts perfectly without delay or error now?

What is contained within these files?

The UsrClass.dat registry file is mounted on HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Classes
