Hi
Can anyone offer me some basic guidance to see if it maybe possible to install Linux Mint on an old Laptop that contains Windows XP.
Having had a quick browse thru the Forums Linux related threads or posts.. there are 29 pages which started in 2005
and only the last 3 pages have been created in the last 10 years.
I found a couple of threads that may refer to what I am looking for... that may help me.
On and off over the last 12 months I had been trying to research and consider trying to install Linux Mint on my Old Dell Inspiron Laptop
that also still contains Windows XP.,
I am well aware of certain issues of using Windows XP (that has stopped working due to no further updates etc on many websites in the last 12 month inc All email services I prior had used)
but I am very much used to it even if just for general browsing at least until I have an alternative operating system that I think I will be contented with
So initially ,For the time being I want to see if its possible to install Linux on my harddrive while still maintaining or keeping Windows XP on it.
I have a Linux Mint Cinnamon Tina 19.2 - 32 bit DVD disc that I have managed to attempt to load onto my laptop via DVD / CD writer Compact Disc Drive.
On loading the DVD... it seemed rather slow to load taking about 10 minutes.
I believe its possible to fully install it onto my Laptops hardrive from the DVD disc.
BUT I am wondering how long it may take to fully install it...
I assume it depends on the age and condition of my computer and type of chip and disc space or ram available.
I have a 60 GB Hardrive but has 8.6 GBs free space.
On looking thru Control Panel , System, General option, it suggests the computer has 1.89 GBs of RAM...
But I am not if this is in total or free Ram disc space !
on reading another article... it suggests one needs 4 GBs of RAM and 100 GBs Hard Drive ! Which unfortunatly on my present laptop I do not have.
I have one external hardrive over 500 GBs
Linux Mint System Requirements
- 4 GB of RAM
- 100 GB of hard drive space
- 64 bit CPU (single core) with 2 GHz speed or better
The Chip is AMD Turion 64 mobile technology MK-36
I think Windows Software and Program files that I have takes up about 2 to 3 GBs space. at thats what each folder showed in C Drive folders under
properties.
on doing a quick search online to check how much disc space is required its suggests 15 to 20 GBs is required for best use.
but a minmum maybe possible at 3 to 8 GBs.
I also am not sure if its possible to somehow have it some how combined on an external hardrive which I have two with over 40 Gbs free space.
How much disc space needed to load linux mint cinnamon 19.3
To load Linux Mint Cinnamon 19.3, you need at least 15GB of disk space 123. However, it is recommended to have 20GB of disk space for a comfortable usage12. The initial installation is a compressed archive, so you can expect 3-4GB of disk space to be used4. A fresh Mint install with Cinnamon is just about 7.8GB5.
But at the moment I am not too sure how best to do it.
I am aware of using or creating partitions on ones Laptops Hardrive. and maybe thats what I need to do.
I dont think I presently have any partitions and I would have to research again how to go about creating them.
Unless there is also a way to have Linux Mint installed just on the main hardrive along with Windows XP
can anyone tell me if they think it maybe possible.
OR could I also just use it by loading it from the Disc drive only and hopefully still use it to connect to the Internet..
I have obtained a Wireless Network adaptor (WNA ) that claims to work on both Win Xp and Linux that I use to act as a hotspot to pick up a wifi or wireless
signal from a mobile phone network connection.
I just need to find suitable trust worthy software download to install and use it. if I can get linux and the WNA to load on my laptop ok.
Any advice appreciated in advance.
Thank you
