Hi. I have a computer that is starting to run a little laggy, and I can no longer play my games on it.

I was wondering if it would be better to purchase a new one, or just upgrade some of my hardware.

I play a lot of RPG and the sims4, sims 4 won't even play on my computer with all my mods anymore. Plays laggy without mods.

The rest just lag so badly.

What would be the best course of action please?

Thank you.

Sorry but you have post on a tech forum asking for help but have provided zero information about your computer or it`s hardware, this makes it impossible for anyone to be able to safely advise you.

If the computer is a desktop can you post the brand and model name or number of the power supply (PSU).

Download then run Speccy ( free ) and post the resultant url for us, details here, this will provide us with information about your computer hardware + any software that you have installed that may explain the present issue/s.

To publish a Speccy profile to the Web:

  1. In Speccy, click File, and then click Publish Snapshot.
  2. In the Publish Snapshot dialog box, click Yes to enable Speccy to proceed.
  3. Speccy publishes the profile and displays a second Publish Snapshot. You can open the URL in your default browser, copy it to the clipboard, or close the dialog box.

The link is all good

The Speccy info suggests that you have a Dell Alienware desktop, is that correct.

If the above is correct, you have limited upgrade options but there are ways of improving the present PCs performance.

Get back to us on the above.

It would have helped if you told us the actual model as it would help with research, Aurora R5 or R7 being just two variants of the same PC.

Being what it is unfortunately limits your options upgrade wise with adding more RAM and an SSD about as much as you can realistically do.

The present GPU is still decent and the PSU that the PC is matched to the GPU so I would leave both as they are, new GPUs are large, power hungry and your case limited for space which would limit your options.

To help with you decide on whether to upgrade or not see the specific article here

The present PC could be set up better to improve performance so if me I would go the RAM and SSD upgrade route + set the PC up properly first.

Great, do you have a link to what you have purchased.

how do I configure my computer correctly?

Patience is a virtue and for us to be best able to help you - you need to help us.

We need you to provide this information, Dell are notoriously picky when it comes to drivers and so much so that they must be installed in a set order, see installing Dell drivers in the correct order info here once we have the correct PC info we can let you know what drivers will be required ** so that you can download and save them to something like a small capacity USB flashdrive, you are also going to need a 16GB or above flashdrive for downloading and saving a Windows 11 ISO to.

** This will avoid Dell foisting a load of bloatware on you.

For clarity;

I also ordered the ssd you recommended and the ram I ordered

Upgrading the RAM and adding an SSD was recommended but not any specific RAM or SSD recommendation was made by me and sorry to say that by not checking with us first you have ordered RAM that is not appropriate for your requirements;

The fastest RAM that your CPU can handle is 2666MHz, you can confirm this at Intel here

Your MB does not support 32GB RAM sticks and for the model of PC + Intel CPU that is present the maximum speed of the RAM is also confirmed by Dell as 2666MHz, you can likewise confirm this for yourself at Dell here

do you have a link to what you have purchased.

You neglected to do as was asked so we can`t check to see if you have ordered an appropriate SSD.

I'm sorry. Been computer less for almost a year and just want to use it.

I miss spoke when I said you recommended, I used the recommendation from the alien ware site and article you sent me to. I think I did this correctly, this is the link for the ssd card

What I get using the info your provided

You dont need 64GB of RAM, even when gaming you would have 40GB+ doing absolute zero, Corsair CMK32GX4M2A2666C16 Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4 2666 MHz C16 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit, Black all that you need and is a better performer than the GSkill at your link.

Good choice of SSD, both for the brand and the spec.

I'm in the UK and you in the US so it is difficult for me picking parts for you but go here

G.Skill Aegis 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-2666 CL19 Memory

The RAM at the link is 2666MHz without being overclocked. go here for the specs from G-Skill.
