I'm looking for a Skype alternative.

I want something that our family of six adults can use to send text, images, videos to and from using phones and/or computers.

Windows, Android, iPhone functionality needed. Mac & Linux (Ubuntu) would be a plus.

I ONLY want to get notifications when family members are contacting me. (That's one reason why I won't use Facebook Messenger.)

Privacy is a concern. I don't want to be easily found by others outside the family. Encrypted messaging preferred.

Voice and video calls are nice but not necessary. Screen sharing nice but not necessary.

Skype's performance has degraded significantly in recent months with texts arriving hours or days later, images sometimes arriving not at all, and forget about videos.

Any suggestions?

Viber is an alternative for your needs. Works a bit different than Skype, since it is connected to a phone number, but as soon as you do this, you can have it on all your devices (mobile and desktop devices, including PC).
