I am running Windows 98. I have Media Player 9.0 and latest updates for both.

I have no problem running any video files (compatible with Media Player) except AVI files.

When I try to run an AVI file, the Media Player window opens;

I get the "connecting" message across the bottom of the screen

after some time, I get a message that says "error downloading codec"

then the file runs, but only the audio.

any suggestions?

You need to install the proper codecs, which aren't on the Microsoft website, or MP can't access the website. The second most popular format, after .mpeg, is the divx.avi, so you probably have to get divx codec pack from www.divx.com.
