Trying to help my daughter's friend fix her very sick laptop. It take about 10 minutes to start up (WinBook J1). I ran her installed Norton Antivirus; found nothing. Went to TreneMicro Housecall, found 3 viruses and countless spyware. Removd them. Her previously installed Ad-aware, and spybot couldn't get any definition updates eitehr by manual or automatic so uninstalled them.Ran the WinsocXPFix program and Cleanup. Reinstalled Ad-aware and Spybot. Still can't get udpates but ran scans with existing defs. Nothing significant. Ran CWShredder, nothing found. Ran Regsupreme and found a few invalid extensions. Still no updating. Can't even get Windows XP Sp1a! Running TDs-3 now. I do notice a LOGINSERVER environement variable of LOGONSERVER=\\LYNNCOMP which seems odd since its a stand alone laptop (student).

I have the Hijackthis log file if necessary

Any suggestions :tazz:

Thanks,

By going through the checklist, I found 3 Trojans -- one was corrupting Symantec Anti-virus. I finally uninstalled/reinstalled Symantec and fixed the final problem. The Malware checklist is a really good list of things to do. It just didn't really point out that corrupted anti-virus software can really cause a lot of strange issues like not able to get windows updates, anti-spy ware updates, etc.

Sorry, the machine is gone. She had to return to work. I sure hope she isn't having any problems.
