The EA press release i read said "All new graphics engine" and they did spend years making it, they started full development for it two years ago as far as i remeber. Unmodded if you modify it, it is no longer BF2.

It may be an updated version of the BF1942 engine but I highly doubt it is from scratch. Either way they still pretty much stole Desert Combat's content for this and repackaged it as a new game with better graphics.

February 4, 2004 - Digital Illusions CE (DICE), developers of the popular and much-acclaimed Battlefield 1942, announced today that they will be working with Desert Combat creator Trauma Studios on one of DICE's "previously announced projects."

in retrospect this was battelfield 2.

Scott Evans: Battlefield 2 is powered by a completely new and cutting edge engine. It simply looks amazing. The new engine brings the battlefield to life like never before with dynamic lighting effects, high detail multi-texturing processes, greater ambient physics modeling, material penetration properties, normal mapping, ragdoll physics, etc., etc. We'll be releasing screen shoots soon to show off the new engine. Also new to BF2 is a high performance audio engine. The audio team at DICE is doing outstanding job with their work. When I play BF2 I feel the urge to actually duck when I'm in a firefight. Those guys are intent on bringing the battlefield to life with a rich and detailed audio experience and they are delivering in spades. We'll also be innovating on the number of players supported at any one time in the battlefield. More details on that to come.

taken from http://pc.gamespy.co...2/507635p2.html

and last but not least....

As you know, Trauma Studios has been aquired by Digital Illusions, makers of Battlefield 1942.
Now we are working hard on a new game based on the Battlefield 2 engine technology. This has kept us busy and therfore put DesertCombat on hold.

Fortunetly for us, some of the DC developers that did not join Trauma Studios because of distance, school and various other reasons got together with fans and built an extension to DesertCombat called, DC_Final. We think they did a great job delivering new content to DesertCombat fans and they have recently released it.

So make sure you grab a copy and play it, its a lot of fun and you will enjoy the new maps, characters and weapons that they have created.

Good Job DC Final team,
Frank DeLise

so they hardly stole anything from Desert combat.

also in regards to the shader mod:

For GeForce4 owners, here is a link to the BF2 shader mod which allows you to play BF2 in Singleplayer (with lots of graphical glitches). Note however that using such mods will likely be detected as cheats by PunkBuster (See PunkBuster below) and you will be kicked and/or your account will be banned permanently. This is because using lower level shaders results in a range of graphical glitches such as invisible objects, seeing through walls, etc. which may be used as an unfair advantage

and the maker of the shader mod says its only 30% complete.

hmmm. ok I think thats enough fuel for the fire for now... :tazz:

When they aquired Trauma they obtained rights to all the DC content and used it in BF2. You better do some research on what happened to Trauma after they used them.

Desert combat, never actually heard of the game or played and noone i know has played it or read a review on it. And we are a bunch of lanners always hunting good games. So obviously it cant have been that good to take alot of the content from. Also what do you mean by content its not like BF2 has an award winning story lines and models are very limited as they are real things an m4 is an m4 no matter what game its in the only difference is how well its modelled and textured etc. Game developers and software developers in general reuse code and material as much as possible, they do it that way because it would take forever to code every module individually from scratch and every model.

You never heard of Desert Combat? It is 80% of the BF2 content. All those models ect.. except for the Chinese stuff. DICE and EA bought them to make BF2. I strongly suggest you get BF1942 and install Desert Combat you will see exactly what I am talking about.

Keep in mind the models in BF2 are higher detailed renders with new shader effects. The models for BF1942 had to be scaled down for the engine. But if you think DICE made all that stuff out of thin air I have a bridge to sell you.

man I had to do some digging. [bleep] ea strikes again. what a bunch of idiots. I could have seen them consolidating trama into the canadienne office, but....

http://www.gamecloud...?article_id=240

anyway I bet they regroup and refound a studio. probably wont here much till the end of the year.

WarriorScot.... dude what rock have you been under. almost everyone who played 1942 switched to DC.

btw why does ea want so much $$ for a ranked server? its crazy. Not to mention that there are not a lot of good hosts for bf2 servers. where we have our server at they don't have a clue what they are doing. so once we settle the finacial matter my clan is going out of the battlefield business and waiting on Day of Defeat......

sigh.... ok rant off now.

Never been a bf1942 fan neither did most of my friends, by the time i played it i was rather unimpressed with the graphics, even considering how old it is always been a big flashpoint player, was good for a fiver though.

Well like i said nothing wrong with taking the models and revemping them you can only have so many different models of a man in desert cammies with an m4. Most games you play didnt make most of there models themselves, they find good ones and revamp them, its only when they need somnething different they make new ones. It just means we get our games in decent time.

Alright.. I am sick of this Generally idiot saying that BF2 is the same as DC or "80% DC" as they said.
Complete BS. DC and BF2 are two completely different games. and nearly all the guns are different. the only ones I can see that are close to the same are the heavy assault guns. But I can't see how you're saying all the models are the same... ALL the infantry look different, all the vehicles look different, all the maps look different, all the buildings are different, NEARLY EVERYTHING ABOUT THE GAMEPLAY (with the exception of the flag capturing and that obvious stuff that started with 1942) IS DIFFERENT! So you CANNOT come here and say that BF2 is 80% DC. Bull shiat.

as we all like to say in the gaming realm. GO AWAY N00B!
