We have a lot of problems with Firefox and Acrobat 6. One of my clients has no need to make pdf files so I uninstalled Adobe 6 and installed Reader 7. After all the rebooting, I loaded up the program, I got the licence agreement, I was able to open pdfs, etc. However, after I quit the program, and reloaded it, nothing happened. If I went into the process viewer there were several instances of the executable running. I ran the same installer on my machine, no problems.

I googled around and found nothing. Thought you guys may have another solution.

Thanks

View Post

how does this extension help me? acrobat doesnt even load. if i double click the icon, click the start menu, open a pdf in the browser nothing. the splash screen doesnt load, but i got tons of acrobat reader exes in my process list.

there must be a reason why this is happening. it works fine on my machine, and others, just his doesn't work at all.

uninstall adobe reader, go into the c:\program files\adobe folder and run the uninsatll.exe if its listed there and then delete the adobe folder. reboot and reinstall adobe. then download any updates (there should be 2 available). reboot after they are installed and see what happens.

hello,

well i just tried it and it seemed not to work at all. even after reboots. when the update was updating, the acroread exe was still open, forcing me to kill the process. after the sucessful update, i rebotted and i was unable to start it again. it seems like after opening up initially, i accept the licence, then after i quit, it stays open, but even after i kill the tasks it wont open.

below is a hijack this log, maybe this can offer some additional insite.

I have similar problem:
Adobe will open first time, locally ( i.e. not via web browser) after a fresh install. After that, any attempt to open a PDF file locally nothing happens. If I look in TASK MANAGER, i see instances of acrord32.exe , using up to 80% of cpu, but no other indication of adobe reader doing anything.

I have uninistalled ver 7, downloaded version 6 and have same problem. I 've also downloaded the 2 updates to ver 7, all with same results.
I have laptop , with same version of windows xp and version 6 runs fine.

The only thing I did on desktop that was not done on laptop , was to install the ARSU ( speedup for adobe reader). At some point in my troubleshooting I uninstalled ARSU with no impact on the problem.

Any hints/suggestions more than welcome...this is very frustrating to say the least!

oaky i found this out today

if i log in as a different user, acrobat works fine.
if i login back as the affected user, initially it works, after adobe quits, the process stays open. if i kill the process it still fails, but if i delete teh adobe reader registry keys for it, it then loads fine, until i quit, it wont read load, the process still is open.

i hope this helps bc im in a real jam.

sounds like you get to rebuild the users profile. I didn't see anything in the log to indicate any problems. If you had microsoft antispy or spybot's tea timer I would think that may be the issue. However since you can login as another user then something must be wrong in that profile. logon as the working client. rename the other users profile. have them log back in and then copy and files over that you need.

problem is, the users login through a domain. so i should login as a local admin, rename his user.domain to somehting else, have him login as usual, so the profile is recreated, logout, login as local admin, copy the files over?

thanks

yep, thats pretty much it. the profile will be recreated when they login. mostly just things like my documents, favorites, and local settings will need to be transfered.

so saved passwords, emails in outlook, etc will be retained this way? i only ask bc they are going to ask when i fiddle with the computer. (files on the desktop, installed printers, etc will still be there?)

if so, thanks so much, ill let you know my results. is there by any chance anyway to fix the profile, or figure out what caused this, as this will most likely be time consuming and the individuals computer who this belongs to will most likely not have much time for me to fix it. so far, it appears only acrobat is the only thing going haywire.

you will have to setup the printers, mapped drives, and email.

I could show you some shortcuts, but with the registry issues realted to the profile I wouldn't use them.

don't worry to much. if things go horribly wrong you can just rename everything back to the original and pick up from there.
