I'm new to linux so I've being trying out various live cd distros (Whax, knoppix, knoppix-std) and everything works fine on knoppix 3.9 but when I load up whax or knoppix-std on my vaio notebook and try to configure the wireless adapter it doesn't recognize it.

I open the console and type iwconfig and all I get is:

lo no wireless extensions

eth0 no wireless extensions

eth1 no wireless extensions

My notebook has a intel ipw2200 minpci card (I think) and it works fine with whoppix but for some reason won't show up with the other two.

have you tried searching for the drivers for those particular distros? sometimes with the live versions you can save a driver on your hd and access it from inside the live distro

thx i'll try that. If I do get the drivers though I don't think I can access my windows drive from knoppix because of the format (ntfs). I can use a usb key so maybe that'll work but I guess I'll cross that bridge when i get to it
