I am having a lot of popups with those ad.yieldmanager.com and other ad windows, associated with slow IE performance, and the constant flickering arrow with hourglass cursor when in IE. In addition, I am now getting the WinFixer popup on every start (see detail below)

I followed and have completed your required 1st steps with these anomalies:

CleanUp!: Done
Ad-Aware SE: Ad-Aware identifies about 326 critical objects but when I go to delete, the program hangs at the "Deleting ..." windows. Same result 3 times. Prior to Ad-Aware, I did not have WinFixer 2005 popups. But you should know that after reviewing the scan results and visiting TAC page for ista, they started right then. Now I get the WinFixer popup window on every startup.
CWShreddder: Done nothing found
Spybot: Done nothing found
Ewido: Did not use since I'm running WinME
Trend Housecall: Scan starts and then midway IE pops Windows error message that it has to close IE. Same result 2 times
TrendMicro PC-illin 2005 is running on this PC
Windows Update: Done

I am ready to provide HJT scan when you are ready. Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. I gratefully await your assistance. Thanks a lot!

Thanks for your guidance! Everything seems to work just fine now. I do not have extra popup windows and IE is running normal.

However, the ActiveScan seems to show some spyware and adware present and here is that scan:

Performed steps as you advised. Because some files did not exist, decided to run the ActiveScan again. I deleted the tvmcwrd.dll and GatorPdpPlugin.log files here but am not sure whether to delete the remaining. Here is that scan resault:

Only 2 files left! :tazz:
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on the configure button on the bottom right
  • Click on the tab "Misc Tools"
  • Click on "Delete File on Reboot"
  • Navigate to this file - C:\WINDOWS\GatorPdpPlugin.log
  • Double click on that file.
  • HJT asks you if you want to reboot, now. Click "no".

Do that for the following files also, until you get to the last one, then click "yes" when HJT asks you to reboot.
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll

Post back when you finish and tell me how your computer is running :)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read How I got Infected

I have a Netgear firewall/router WGT624 with wireless disabled. I don't still need a software firewall, right? Are there recommended tweaks to the configuration of the Netgear router?

Thanks, once again, for your help. You guys are the greatest! Computer is still running fine. I am following your last set of instructions.

I would suggest that you also have a Software firewall like one of the ones liste above.

Are there recommended tweaks to the configuration of the Netgear router?

I would suggest that you ask that question here:
