I've been struggling for 3 days trying to get rid of the above pop ups. I ran adware se, spybot, counterspy and deleted my temp files with cleanup and still can't get rid of the pop ups. Below is my higjackthis log. If anyone could help me, I'd be most appreciative.

Ok, you have couple bad infections there.. Let's go with this first;

Please download the l2mfix from one of the locations below;

Save the file to your desktop and double-click l2mfix.exe

Click the Install - button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log.

Copy the contents of that log and paste it into your next reply.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until I ask you to!

Note; if you recieve any error messages for CMD or Autoexec.bat>> select option 5 from the l2mfix and once at the site, click on the link that apply to your operating system!

Double-click the file it downloads and extract the files to its predetermined System32 folder!

Also post a fresh HijackThis log (Don't attach) along with L2Mfix log.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double-click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log, and we'll clean up what's left.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

Well, I got impatient and found Vern_1017's problem which looked a lot like mine and was able to pretty much fix the pop-ups. however, now I have a few new problems.

I ran in safemode ccleaner, then nailfix.exe, then ewido and deleted the following files from hijack this. F2-Reg: system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\window\nail.exe and 04-HKL \..\run:.....exe r.

I now have aurora popping up and attempting to access the internet, but I do not allow it. I also have thnall (or something like that) popping up and attempting to access but does not. There are no more adware pop ups (YAY!) and I'm running clean except for my f drive (CD R-w) now won't read or write and upon booting up I get the following message:

Error loading c:\windows\cfgmgr52.dll. The specified module could not be found.

I did not yet run the l2mfix folder again (I had done it in safe mode as part of yesterday's fix) and I am resigned to the fact that I may have to reformat my hard drive, but will be patient waiting for a response this time (I'm a newbie). Is aurora or possibly hiding in my back ups? I can switch to a n0 internet access computer but don't want to add the virus to a second computer? thanks for your help and here is my new hijackthis log as of this morning:

Please proceed with the L2mfix step 2. You still have Aurora there, that's the problem.

We'll get this sorted if you can just please be patient and follow the steps from me. Every infection is a bit different and it can sometimes be a bad idea to follow someone else's steps.

I tried running the l2mfix. When I hit 2 and return, I got a message stating "killing explorer and rundll" before the desktop icons disappeared. I ran the program for 1.5 hours and never got a log. I rebooted and tried it again and this time let it run for 3 hours. During that time, I got the following message:

bqqshiu.exe is attmpting to connect to a DNS server

Of course I did not let it in. At the end of the 3 hours I rebooted again and this time closed the DOS window when it came up. Still no log to be found. Then the following two messages were displayed with that wonderful thumping sound "Error loading AUNPS2.dll" and "Error loading cfgmgrs2.dll."

I removed my Norton Personal Firewall (because I have Zone alarm). I also ran a new hijackthis which follows. I can get the internet and am not getting any pop-ups but still can't use my F drive. I got an update notice from Zone Alarm, but did not download it because I am afraid to put anything new on the computer.

I found my recovery disks, so if you think that reformatting the hard drive is the path of least resistance, I'm ready to do that.

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix. Be sure to ask any questions before proceeding the fix. (Might be easier if you first read through the instructions, then ask, then follow them.)

Launch Notepad, copy & paste the following text from the code box below, into a empty text file (Starting from @Echo);

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat

A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now run a scan with HiJackThis and check the following object for removal if present;

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Reboot back into normal mode and do the following steps;

• Download DSRFIX from HERE onto your Desktop.
• Unzip and EXTRACT the files to your Desktop.
• The program creates and names the new folder to house the files.
• DO NOT RUN IT YET

• Download Cleanup from Here (Alternate site if the above is not working Go Here)
• A window will open and choose SAVE, then DESKTOP as the destination.
• On your Desktop, click on Cleanup40.exe icon.
• Then, click RUN and place a checkmark beside "I Agree"
• Then click NEXT followed by START and OK.
• A window will appear with many choices, keep all the defaults as set when the Slide Bar to the left is set to Standard Quality.
• Click OK
• DO NOT RUN IT YET

• CLOSE INTERNET EXPLORER, if it is open

• Open the folder dsrfix
• Double click on the dsrfix batch file( the one with the little gear in it )
• Once dsrfix has completed it will close on its own

• Run Cleanup

• Click on the "Cleanup" button and let it run.
• Once its done, close the program.

• REBOOT your system.

• Please restart HJT and post back a fresh HJT log for review.

I completed all your directions. As you can see, Nail.exe is still there. I'm not sure if we ever disabled my automatic back up/recovery.

the DOS screen still keeps popping up on reboot from the l2Mfix that we ran yesterday. If i don't close out the window immediately, it starts to run stating "Kiilling explorer & run dll." Then all my icons disappear.

In addition, upon start up I am getting the following messages:

"Error loading Cfgmgr52.dll" followed by 'Error loading AUNPS2.dll"

upon trying to use my F drive, I get the following message:

F:/is not a valid Win 32 application.

BTW, while running cleanup, my zone alarm asked me if I wanted to change my default windows screen to msn, and I declined.

Right Click on the CounterSpy Icon located in your system tray.
With your mouse, hover over Active Protection Status (This should be enabled)
A menu will slide out, then right click on Disable Active Protection

Please print these instructions out, or write them down, as you can't read them during the fix.

First;

Update Ewido.

Download CleanUp
Install the program, dont run it yet, we will later.

Please download this file: the Nailfix Utility
Save it to your desktop.
DO NOT run it yet.

Please download APT and unzip the contents to a new folder on your desktop.

• Open the folder you just created and click on apt.exe and search in the window for hrsrcuk.exe.
• Open your C:\Windows\system32 folder and search for C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrsrcuk.exe.
  Don't delete it yet, just leave the system32 folder open so you can see the bad file.
• In APT again, Select hrsrcuk.exe and Click Kill3
  
• Then immediately delete C:\WINDOWS\system32\hrsrcuk.exe from your system32 folder.

Close APT.

Launch Notepad, copy & paste the following text from the code box below, into a empty text file (Starting from @ECHO);

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as type" field says "All files".

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on remove.bat

A window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next, double-click on nailfix.exe.
Click "Next" in the setup, then make sure "Run Nailfix" is checked and click "Finish".
Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now open Ewido and do a scan of your system.

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• Clean anything it finds.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close Ewido.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Close all open windows except for HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Enable show hidden files and folders:

Go to My Computer >Tools >Folder Options >View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing / visible. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files - option.

Now using Windows Explorer locate the following files/folders and delete if present;

ALCXMNTR.EXE <= Find with Windows Search
AUNPS2.DLL <= Find with Windows Search
C:\WINDOWS\cfgmgr52.dll
C:\Program Files\Media Access\ <= Folder

Now run the CleanUp program:

*IMPORTANT NOTE*
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

Running CleanUp

• Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
• When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
• Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
• Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Delete Cookies
    This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
• Click OK
• Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
• When asked to reboot system select No
• Close CleanUp

Finally, restart your computer back into Normal Mode and please post a new HJT log, as well as the ewido report log from the Ewido scan by using Add Reply

i had some problems running Ewido, so had to keep going back to download and then going into safe mode. I ran through the whole sequence starting at the safe mode and when I rebooted, the messages did not appear: However, the dos command screen popped up cmd.exe.

My F drive is now reading. Below is my latest hijack this file followed by the Ewido log. Everything seems okay except for that DOS popup. What's next?
