After running a clean, fresh install, I have found that although I have an internal PCI 56k modem installed, my computer cannot detect it. I have checked all the more obvious things that could be wrong: cables, other things on the computer trying to use the same port, etc.

Does anyone have any other ideas of how to fix this problem? (Preferably without taking a screwdriver to the tower!!!)

Howdy:

Have you checked Device Manager for any "Unknown Devices" or items marked with a yellow or red mark??

Odds are, you need to re-install the drivers for it, possibly using the "Add New Hardware" option..

Yep, I have sorted out all those devices marked with the yellow or red marks.

Re-install the drivers? I have tried doing that, they are not found under add new hardware. Also, when I used the modem drivers cd, the modem is not detected in any of the ports yet it is definitely installed.

I have tried to install it using that, it can't detect the modem in the ports. Its not listed in the manufacturer and model bit. I have clicked have disk and have even got the modem listed but when I try and use the modem it is not detected.

:tazz: Am finally properly online! Although your instructions were vague, I managed to succeed anyway thanks mainly to having done it before.

I put the modem in a different PCI slot and it was detected as soon as I turned the computer on. Thanks everyone.

Also thanks to dhooper for his reinstall run through, if anyone has problems with the D:\WIN98\SETUP part of the process, just put in D:\setup after A:\ and it should work.
