My sister encountered problems with our computer the morning after she downloaded an ActiveX plug-in to play an online game.
A message popped up saying an error had occurred with Winlogon.exe and it had to shut down, and then a message with an error about the sgtray.exe and a file with lots of numbers and letters popped up, the taskbar disappeared, and the computer shut down.
later, a message from our Sophos AntiVirus indicated access was denied to remove Troj/Cass-A\system32\dist001.exe.
I started the computer in safe mode to avoid it shutting down unexpectedly, and ran Ad-aware to do some initial clean-up. I restarted and ran CleanUp, Ad-aware again,CWShreader, Spybot SD, Trend Micro, etc. I noticed some similar files coming up after Ad-aware finished, including SurfSideKick, ClearSearch, and 180Assistant, which I've had inundate my own computer before. I know I had a tough time getting rid of them completely because they still lurked in my computer even though they appeared to be killed. The only way it got completely clean was through this website, so I hope someone can help my parents' home computer.
The computer is pretty stable right now, adn those other messages haven't popped up again since I ran the scans, but I'm getting very odd pop-ups that I don't usually get. The computer also seems bogged down.
I ran hijack This after the last Ad-aware scan, and I recognize a number of infectious files.
Here is my Hijack This log:
