Hi there friends!!

My computer (running XP pro) has been acting up since this morning...
My computer keeps restarting it self every so often. Sometimes it runs fine without any problem, sometimes when i try to run my anti-virus or chkdsk utility the blue screen appears and it re-starts it self.

The blue screen has the message -" KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR" at the top and the code at the bottom is "Stop 0x0000007A" . I had a new 250 GB hard disk in there, about 2 months ago. I noticed that the computer crashes, when i start scanning for viruses or run my checkdisk utility.

I tried doing a system restore to an earlier point, when things were fine - but that doesnt help. Is this a hardware problem ?? or is it caused by a virus or malaware??

Hi,

Here is a MS artical that addresses your issue.

Because the computer freezes when running a virus scan or running checkdisk I would check the ram with memtest86 run from a bootable floppy, let memtest run for at least 3 passes for a quick test if it shows lots of errors thats the problem.

If it don't show errors after 3 passes I would leave it run for 5 hours for a better test.

I started running the memtest this morning before i had to go to school. Did the first 3 passes without any error. I then switched to the extended mode and let it run - and i was around for about an hour or so, and it still hadn't shown any error.

does this mean that the memory is OK? and is a hard disk problem - my next plan of action is to change the SATA cables and the power cable on that hard disk too, and run it for a while. Hopefully this should so something...

yes your memory should be ok and not be the problem. But according to the MS artical it could be many other things

Maybe its the new 250g hardrive because you said the problem started when you installed it, if its not your boot drive disconnect it to see if there is any improvement.

The memory is ok! I ran memtest for like 12 hrs.. and not one error came up. I then proceeded to disconnect my hard drive to check my connections. After I plugged it back in - the computer wont eevn boot and it says Hard Drive not found .... so i think its time to find the guy who sold me the disk on e-bay and have it replaced ...

am going to double check if the jumper settings or anything might have been changed and i hope its not my motherboard fault

My bet its the hardrive since the problem started when you installed it. Just out of curiosity what brand is it?

I hate to buy parts off ebay, sometimes I do but its mainly cases or fans, stuff that don't matter to much.

yeah, am beginning to hate e-bay too, way too many unscrupulous people doing dodgy deals on there. ITs a western digital 250 gig hard drive
