A friend of mine who has Windows XP Professional was wondering if there was any way to make the icons in the desktop be a list, rather than icons. I think this is impossible, but I could be wrong...is there a way to do that?

a shell is a program that changes the way windows looks. windows uses explorer as its default shell but you can make it use something else instead.

download aston shell from here:
looks like you have to pay for the full version

I installed Aston on my computer, but I couldn't find what I wanted. Are you sure Aston can make the desktop icons appears as a list, rather than icons. If so, how do I make it like that?

I founf loads, the default them did it on the version i had, but there are load s of themes. Also depends on what you mean by list, there are lots of types of lists you can have, just plain list of stuff on the desktop like a permanently open start bar(you can put them on as widgets in that case if you want to use a particualer theme that doesnt have a list) or as categorised drop down lists, an aston shell speciality.

I see. When I say list, I mean like if you were in a folder and told it to show the files as a list, a small simple list. Will one of the themes do that?

Yeah i have seen it, you could do it yourself with some widgets, or make your own theme if you want its not to hard.
