After a recent clean reinstall of Windows 98se, and a USB that up til today hadn't worked but is now fine (thanks GTG), my HP 1310 printer won't work. Here's the details:
When I go to print, an error message comes up saying no printer is connected. However, I've installed the software for it, tried to reinstall it but it told me it was already installed. When I use the HP Diagnostics, it tells me that the device is working properly. When I check Device Manager, there are all kinds of funny looking fork shaped symbols with similar variations of "Dot 4 HPZ12" beside them.
What does it all mean and how do I get my apparently installed printer to function properly.
Thanks

First, let's check the BIOS Settings! :tazz:

Hi again GWats...

I've run into a few HP printers that were real picky about how they were installed. Go to Control Panel and open Printers and Faxes...Is your printer listed in the window? If there is a printer listed, Right click on it and choose Delete. Choose Yes when prompted. Delete any and all printers listed. Disconnect the printer from the computer and reboot.

Now...Connect the printer to the computer...You should get a "Found New Hardware" wizard and it should install the printer automatically. If it doesn't, go to Control Panel > Printers and Faxes and click on the link "Add a printer" in the left pane...Follow the wizard to install the printer.

Let me know how it goes...HP uses a couple of different variations of when you actually connect the printer.

One more thing with USB printers - you should normally leave the cable disconnected during installation until prompted by the software.

I went to "Add Printer" in the printer section of Control panel. All the Printers listed were older models (due to the Win98se) and my HP 1310 wasn't listed.
After that I decided to delete all HP stuff from the computer (took a real long time), unplug nthe USB, and reinstall all the HP stuff (took an even longer time). I was prompted during installation to plug in the USB. Once installed, the printer was working fine.
Thanks again GTG!!!
