i left my comp on overnight and awoke to found that my comp had restarted by itself and was on the win xp log in page. when i logged in i then realized that it was running real slow and a popup came up saying i had a parasite. my comp then froze up and restarted on its own. after some research, i found that i had something called virtual bouncer, ad destroyer, and pokapoka76 (as far as i know). apparently these things download and install themselves automatically. so every time i log on, the automatic startup in my msconfig starts these programs, my comp freezes, and it restarts before i can do anything. thus, i cannot enter internet explorer for help, cannot use hijackthis for details, or do anything before the entire machine shuts down. in addition, sometimes it says "error 34" and that my "system has recovered from a problem" before restarting. this is followed by chkdsk which really doesn't do anything. so basically i'm a comp layman and i'm looking for a way to get rid of this problem without losing any files. please help. i'm running windows xp on an ibm with intel processor pentium 3

Get those programs on a CD if you don't have them on this computer already. I want you to boot into Safe Mode and see if that will work...it should without freezing. Run those scans in there...restart and see if you can get back to Normal Mode to run a new HijackThis scan (since we don't want them in Safe Mode).

i managed to open up my windows task manager, opened up my control panel and uninstalled virtual bouncer, ad destroyer, and surfguard. for surfguard i needed to type in a verification code. since removing it things APPEAR better and are not frozen. however i don't know how well it is or whether or not the programs will come back. plus the pokapoka76 thing is still there (as well as other undesirable things).

You must install XP SP1a http://www.microsoft...p1/default.mspx (hold off on SP2 until your computer is clean). Without SP1a, you are wide open to re-infection. When you are done, restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Post that log here.
