After running several processess to clean my pc of spybot [bleep] crapola,
I have found that i can no longer access my :Help and Support" centre
and the corresponding files are either well hidden or gone.

If i click oh the help icon in the start menu - nothing happens
and thats about the size of it.

Im under the impression that the files were deleted by some malicious bug or script and my regclean run deleted the registry key.

I've performed an in depth search for the original folder but find nothing.

Could the damage this bug did be related to the fact that I cant reset my web settings in"Interbet options" either ??


Much geekage would be appreciated.

Hi there admin.

Yes.
Nortons is up to date and working.

What is interesting is recently my previous version of Nortons(2003)
suddenly disallowed real time enabling and download of virus updates,obviously
my time was up.

I am currently running Nortons 2005 but it is only a trial verion so i would imagine i am unable to blame expiration dates this time round.

Do u know of any fixes for this Sir ??? :tazz:

Please go offline, close all browsers and any open Windows, making sure that only HijackThis is open. Scan and when it finishes, put an X in the boxes, only next to these following items, then click fix checked.

Please reboot into safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu).
Be sure you're able to view hidden files, and remove the following files in bold (if found):

Reboot your PC.

found the following infected file and quarantined it.
Intersetingly it is the help centre exe that seemed to evade the eye of the following
software.

Let's try turning off your system restore (instructions below on how to turn off and on. Turn it back on after we get this fixed.)

Turn off system restore and run The Cleaner again.

Make sure you empty your temp. files.

Also, let's try this:

Download the latest version of Ad-Aware from here (if you already have Ad-Aware installed, make sure that it is the latest version and always go online and update it before you run it).

Download Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in here

How to use Lavasoft's VX2 Cleaner plug-in

- Close Ad-Aware 6 and Ad-Watch (if running)
- Download the free VX2 Cleaner at http://updates.ls-se...lvx2cleaner.exe
- Install the VX2 Cleaner
- Start Ad-Aware 6
- Go to "Plug-ins"
- Select the VX2 Cleaner plug-in and click "Run Plugin"
- If your computer isn't infected, click "Close".


If your computer is infected

- Select "Clean system"
- Reboot your computer
- Scan your computer with Ad-Aware
- Remove any VX2 objects detected
- Reboot your computer again
- Run a second scan to make sure the files have been removed from your computer

Reboot your PC.

If you would please, rescan with HijackThis and post a fresh log in this same topic, and let us know how your system's working. :tazz:



To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(Windows XP)
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
