Hi Islandcat
The text I put in blue is what I want you to type. What I put in red is what you click or press.
Do you have a 98se cd ? If yes put this in the cd drive then go to Start>Runsfc
ok This should start system file checker Choose scan for altered files
start this should replace the files needed.
Once it does go to the windows update site & update.
Cheers

Not neccessarily. You may have the installation files on the hard disk. You will have to go in in ms-dos mode, look in C: for a folder named win98 or cabs. If not there, look in Windows\options for such a folder. It should have about a hundred files and maybe a few folders. Browse to that folder when prompted by sfc. If you get hold of a win98 disk I recomend that you copy that folder to your hard drive if you don't have it now. It can save you a lot of grief to have those files on hand. A couple of weeks ago I was able to help someone reinstall his operating system using those files, and he kept all his programs, files and settings.
To use ms-dos mode, when the prompt comes up type in
"cd \ "and hit enter, then enter "dir /p" it will tell you what is in the C: directory. If it isn't there, enter
cd C:\windows\options
and do the dir /p bit, then go
cd whatever the folder is and look in it. When you find the setup folder just type in "setup" and hit enter. Setup should start.
