Hello,

Forgive me if this is a second posting. I was sent to get the latest version of HijackThis. I'm not sure if my first post went through.

I have tried to get byxyw.dll off my computer with AVG Virus Scan, Spysweeper, Spy Hunter, Registry Mechanic, Adaware, Removing VirtuMonde, HijackThis, and even the windows command prompt. When I typed del "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL" it said Access Denied. I also have done AVG and SpySweeper scans in safe mode. I believe this file also installs trojans, but AVG thankfully is able to delete those.

It looks like I have two instances of rundll32.exe running on my computer. I used PRCView, Module Usage to get the IDs of these.

RUNDLL32.EXE 4294789205 C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE Run a DLL as an App 4.90.3000. Copyright © Microsoft Corp. 1991-1998
RUNDLL32.EXE 4294834865 C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32.EXE Run a DLL as an App 4.90.3000. Copyright © Microsoft Corp. 1991-1998

Is there any way I can get this bwxyw.dll file off? Do I have to wipe my computer?

Thank you very much for your help in advance.

Best,

BarbaraAnne

Please print out these instructions or copy them into a text file on your Desktop for easy access.

During the fix, you will be asked to delete some entries or files or uninstall some programs. If in case, you do not see those entries / files / programs, please make a note of it. Continue with the fix and in your next post please inform me of all deviations from the fix prescribed.

1. Download Programs

Please download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -

VundoFix.exe

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files. This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.

2. Delete Rogue files

Please reboot the PC to Command prompt / DOS mode (repeatedly tap the F8 key when the PC is starting up. A menu will come up. Choose the option - Command Prompt.

Please type in the following commands one after the other and hit the enter key after each of the commands -

attrib -r -h -a -s C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL
del C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

Reboot the PC to normal Mode.

3. Remove Infections

In the folder Vundofix which was created earlier, there will be a file - Vundo.reg. Double click on it and let it merge with your registry.

Reboot the PC and post a fresh Hijack This log.

Hello,

Thank you so much for writing back!

I don't have a command prompt / DOS Mode. I have Safe Mode, and I ran the command prompt there. When I typed attrib -r -h -a -s C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL, I got a message: Sharing Violation reading Drive C. Abort? Retry? Fail?

So I couldn't get to the next command to even try to delete the file. I integrated the vundofix.exe reg file into my registry anyway. I got this log from it

Dear BarbaraAnne, :tazz:

Welcome to the Geeks to Go forums.

I'll be taking over your log while tampabelle is away. :)
*************************************

Looking at the following line:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSConfigReminder] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\msconfig.exe /reminder

The entry is not malware, but actually causing your computer to boot in "Selective Startup". This generally indicates that a user has disabled some of the startup items. In order to have the best view of your system's current status, we will need to disable Selective Startup. Please open msconfig and select the "Normal" startup option, then allow the machine to reboot (i.e. that is go to Start -> Run -> type "msconfig" (without the quotes) and press "OK". The "System Configuration Utility" dialog box should pop up, go to the "General Tab" and select "Normal" startup option, then allow the machine to reboot.)
*******************************************

Please restart your computer and post a new HijackThis log. :)

Dear BarbaraAnne, :tazz:

(Note: Please read through these instructions a couple of times before executing the steps in this post.)

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop because we will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet.
******************************

Dear BarbaraAnne, you have to many "HijackThis.exe" files on your computer.

You are currently running HijackThis from your desktop and from your C: drive. Since HijackThis makes backups of any entries you fix, you should create a folder just to hold the HijackThis program and its backups, so the backups and the program are not accidentally deleted. Go to "My Computer", click on c:\ and then go to the "File" menu, choose New -> Folder. Name the folder "HJT" or "HijackThis" and then please copy the "HijackThis.exe" executable there. Then delete the HijackThis.exe files from you C: drive and your desktop, (i.e. remove the HijackThis.exe files from these locations: C:\HIJACKTHIS.EXE and C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP\HIJACKTHIS.EXE).
*****************************

Dear BarbaraAnne, can tell me in detail if you have McAfee antivirus or security software installed on your computer?

Dear BarbaraAnne, your are running a number of anti-spyware programs. You are running Webroot's Spy Sweeper, Bull Guard's Internet Security suite and McAfee's SecurityCenter software. These antispyware programs not only could interfere/conflict with each other, they could slow your system down. I would disable the active, real-time protection on two out of three of these antispyware programs, and use those as on-demand scanners. Which one would be up to you. Note: I would leave the real-time protection on the "Bull Guard's Internet Security suite" and use the "Webroot's Spy Sweeper as an on demand scanner and I would uninstall your McAfee's SecurityCenter software.
******************************

Please download the Killbox. Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://desktop.presa...&c=2C01&lc=0409

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.
*************************

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

1) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox. Put a check mark next to "End explorer shell while killing file".

2) In the main screen of Pocket KillBox, go to Tools in the top menu bar, and select: Delete Temp Files.

3) Select "Delete on Reboot".

4) Copy the file name below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

5) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard". Now you will see, this is pasted in the "Full Path of File to Delete" field.

6) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button.
Click "Ok" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click "Ok" at the Reboot needed prompt.

Restart your computer in normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Hello Rambro,

I did as you asked. There were some glitches.

1. I uninstalled McAfee. There is no McAfee in my Remove Programs file. Whatever McAfee is still there in the msconfig Startup menu is a mystery to me. But I disabled it. I use selective startup.

2. I have AVG Virus Scan that runs all the time. I uninstalled Registry Mechanic and SpyHunter, and chose to disable BullGuard in the msconfig startup menu. I chose to only have AVG. I hope that is ok, and BOY does my computer run better! OMG!!!!!!!!!! :)

3. When I tried to delete the temp files in KillBox, in SafeMode, it stopped when this file automatically went into the "Full Path to Delete" dialog box: C:\WINDOWS\TEM_ISTMPI.DIR Then, the Deltree (include Subdirectories) and KERNEL32.DLL became selected, too. I clicked "End explorer shell while killing file" before I tried to delete the temp files, as instructed.

After 10 minutes of staying in this position, KillBox stopped responding. I never got to Delete on Reboot. So I tried the KillBox process without deleting the temp files. Then I restarted my computer in Normal Mode. I have a HijackThis log for my Selective Startup.

1. I uninstalled McAfee. There is no McAfee in my Remove Programs file. Whatever McAfee is still there in the msconfig Startup menu is a mystery to me. But I disabled it. I use selective startup.

Hi BarbaraAnne, I would like you to put your computer back into normal startup. In fact I would like you to have your computer in normal startup until we get rid of the malware on your computer. Please put your computer back to "normal startup".

Next, I will address the left over McAfee lines that I am finding in your HijackThis log, and will have you fix these lines in a future post.
****************************

Dear BarbaraAnne, I am glad your computer is running better, however, your AVG program is an Antivirus program. Your computer system should have one good Antispyware program. I would like you to re-enable your BullGuard "antispyware" program. An Antivirus program and an antispyware program do different things on a computer system. You should have one antivirus program (i.e. AVG - which is good) and you need to have one fully functional antispyware program (i.e. BullGuard would be a good antispyware program, for all the other antispyware programs on your computer, you should either uninstall them or use them as on demand scanners).

What?, I don't know went on here... but I don't think my instructions were that difficult to follow.

Barabara, your main malware problem in your log is the following lines:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*BYXYW] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL,CreateProtectProc reru

These lines must be fixed, because this is your main "malware" problem (everything is secondary and should fall into place after this malware is fixed), however; in part of the fix of this malware, the following file must be deleted:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

I was reading your previous posts, and the file "BYXYW.DLL" would always come back after you delteted it, that is why I had you run the "Killbox" application.

When you run pocket killbox, that is, when you double click the "killbox.exe" icon, a Pocket kill box dialog box should pop up.

Click on the Tools menu and select the option "Delete Temp Files" a "Delete Temp" files dialog box would pop up asking you "Killbox will attempt to delete temp files in C:\windows\temp", then click on the "Ok" button. An MS-DOS prompt will pop up telling you that all of the files in the temp directory will be deleted. Type in "Y" (without the quotes) and then press the "Enter" key.

Next, I want you to select the "Delete on Reboot" radio button.

Next, I want you to check the "End Explorer Shell While Killing File" checkbox

I next want you to copy the following line to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Control + C :

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

Once the above line is copied to the clipboard, I want you go to the "File" menu in the Killbox application and choose the option "Paste from Clipboard". The line that you copied to the clipboard should now appear in the "Full of File to Delete" dropdown text box (i.e. you can also type the above line in that dropdown text box.).

Lastly, Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button.
Click "Ok" at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
Click "Ok" at the Reboot needed prompt.

That's it. :)

Here are the formal instructions I want you to follow to delete this malware from your computer, because this the most important problem on your computer (but do the other stuff I mentioned in this post).
************************************

Please restart your computer.

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL

O4 - HKLM\..\RunOnce: [*BYXYW] rundll32.exe C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BYXYW.DLL,CreateProtectProc rerun

Hi Rambro,

Thank you very much for your patience.

-------------------

I took some screen shots of what is happening. The two events you described here did not happen for me.

Event 1:
http://www.barbarasd...ledeletion1.JPG

Event 2: no dialog box. No ms-dos prompt. Just a box giving the progress of an automatic deletion of files in the Windows Directory.

http://www.barbarasd...ledeletion2.JPG

Event 3:
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP_ISTMPI.DIR automatically goes in the "Full Path of File to Delete" field. Deltree (include subdirectories) is automatically checkec.

http://www.barbarasd...ledeletion3.JPG

When I tried to take a screenshot of this in safe mode, it went blank. I tried just for the [bleep] of it in normal mode, and the Killbox dialog box also went blank.

Then the program stops responding. Here is my latest Hijack This file.

Dear BarbaraAnne, thank you for those "screen shots" detailing the problems you were having deleting the files in the temp file folder through the "Killbox" application. My short answer is that I don't why you are running into the problems deleting the temp files in the temp folder through the "Killbox" application. However, don't worry too much about this, I will have you delete the temp files in the temp folder through "Disk Cleanup" (that is by running cleanmgr - see the instructions near the end of this post).

What follows is the next set of instructions for this post. I think you have have gotten rid of the bad malware file, in question, but you have to finish up by fixing the following line: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - (no file), in the HijackThis application, this is included in the instructions below. Good Luck!!! :)
******************************

Please download and run a Free Trial of Trojan Hunter at http://www.misec.net...rojanHunter.exe. Please restart your computer.

Please run the Housecall online virus scan located at: http://housecall.tre.../start_corp.asp. Follow the prompts to scan your hard drive for viruses. Select the "Autoclean" option so that Housecall will remove any viruses from your system. When the scan is finished, please restart your computer.

Then please run the Panda scan here: http://www.pandasoft...n_principal.htm. Delete any viruses found, and restart your computer.
*******************************

Download, install, update, configure and run a scan with Ad-Aware SE at the following link: http://rstones12.gee...areSE_setup.htm

Restart your computer.
*************************

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel, and then Add and Remove Programs. Look for the following installed programs and if they are listed click on each one and then click on the Add/Remove button and follow the prompts for the program to be uninstalled:

Optional programs you can uninstall, through the Add/Remove program:

LimeWire is a Peer to Peer (P2P) file-sharing client. Note - as with all P2P sharing programs they are susceptible to various forms of malware". That is LimeWire is a program that can be used as a vehicle for downloading spyware on to your computer system.

Uninstall the following program through Add/Remove programs:

LimeWire and/or LimeShop

See the following link: http://www.spywarein...m/articles/p2p/.
*****************************

There is a windows critical update installed on your computer that has been known to cause problems on windows 98 and windows ME operating systems. Microsoft has even acknowledged that it has caused problems for some users.

It is represented in the HJT log as line: O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [KB891711] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

I recommend that you uninstall this critical update in the Add/Remove progams of the control panel.

Please restart your computer.
*******************************

Run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entry/entries (if they exist):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - (no file)

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you to fix these items:

If you choose to remove LimeWire, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O4 - Startup: LimeWire 4.0.8.lnk = C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire 4.0.8\LimeWire.exe

COMPAQ-RBA.EXE - Applies to CPQBootPerfDB below as well. These files generate some kind of server or servlet that attempts to connect with Compaq online. They are like Trojans, but fairly harmless. They send information on the "Compaq Advisor/Compaq Message Screener" application that comes with every Compaq computer and provide feedback on how computer users use the Message Advisor. These messages appear occasionally and instruct and advise users on their computer and its use. They generally attempt to get you (these messages) to connect to Compaq's website. They may be safely disabled via (1) MSCONFIG or (2) Start -> Programs -> Compaq Advisor -> Advisor Settings under the "advanced" tab. Not required and can cause problems. If you use these features then don't fix the following lines.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CpqBootPerfDb] C:\Cpqs\Scom\CpqBootPerfDb.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Compaq_RBA] C:\PROGRAM FILES\COMPAQ\COMPAQ MESSAGE SCREENER\BIN\COMPAQ-RBA.EXE

If you chose to remove the windows critical update, put a check next to the following entry as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [KB891711] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\KB891711.EXE

If you chose to remove your McAfee's SecurityCenter software, put a check next to the following entries:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [McVsRte] C:\PROGRA~1\MCAFEE.COM\VSO\mcvsrte.exe /embedding
O16 - DPF: {EF791A6B-FC12-4C68-99EF-FB9E207A39E6} (McFreeScan Class) - http://download.mcaf...478/mcfscan.cab
O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} - http://download.mcaf...84/mcinsctl.cab
O16 - DPF: {BCC0FF27-31D9-4614-A68E-C18E1ADA4389} - http://download.mcaf...,21/mcgdmgr.cab

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Please reboot your computer into Safe mode (continually tap the F8 key while your system is starting, select Safe Mode from the menu). For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site: http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Next, make sure your PC is configured to show hidden files. Here is how to do this:

Windows ME

* Double-click on the My Computer icon.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* After the new window appears select the View tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
* Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.
* Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

Here is a link for further explanation: http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

Optional folder/folders marked in blue to be deleted (if they exist):

If you uninstalled LimeWire you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\LimeWire

If you uninstalled the windows critical update you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711

If you uninstalled McAfee's SecurityCenter software you need to remove the next folder also:

C:\Program Files\MCAFEE.COM

Finally, clean out temporary and Temporary Internet files. Go to Start -> Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Restart your computer in normal mode, and then please post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)

Dear BarbaraAnne, :tazz:

You may want to print out these instructions or save them as a text file with "Notepad" to your desktop.
******************************

Please run HijackThis and click "Scan." Place checks next to the following entries (if they exist):

Optional Fixes

I highly recommend you to fix these items:

If you chose to remove your McAfee's SecurityCenter software, put a check next to the following entry:

O16 - DPF: {EF791A6B-FC12-4C68-99EF-FB9E207A39E6} (McFreeScan Class) - http://download.mcaf...478/mcfscan.cab

Dear BarbaraAnne, the following lines are optional fixes to stop unnecessary programs from running on startup, which may increase computer system performance. I highly recommend you to fix these items:

scardsvr.exe - Related to SmartCard readers and sometimes uses lots of system resources. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [ScardSvr] C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ScardSvr.exe

The Real Player automatic update utility. It has no real functional purpose. I would certainly stop this from running on startup. I would fix this line. Here is a link on how to disable Real Player from resetting itself at startup: http://www.help2go.com/article211.html.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

This is is a task tray icon which is used as a shortcut to a number of QuickTime related features. You really don't need this in your system tray. It is safe to remove this from your startup. QuickTime's most common purpose is for watching movies commonly in the .mov format. I suggest you fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime

WksSb.exe - The Works Portfolio tool lets you collect and organize text and pictures from the Web or your favorite program. Can be prevented from starting from a setting within Portfolio. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers

WINAMPa.exe - Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WinampAgent] C:\Program Files\Winamp\winampa.exe

aim.exe - AOL Instant Messenger. If connected to the internet, automatically runs up AIM. Convenience more than anything. Available via Start -> Programs. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [AIM] C:\PROGRAM FILES\AIM\aim.exe -cnetwait.odl

Added with WinZip version 8.1. "The new WinZip Quick Pick taskbar tray icon gives you instant access to WinZip and your Zip files. Just left click the icon to open WinZip, or right click it to instantly reopen recently used Zip files, access your Favorite Zip Folders, open WinZip Help, or start WinZip itself.". You can right-click and close it - choosing to not re-load it at start-up. Please fix this line, because this program can be run other than in startup and this will increase the performance of your computer.

O4 - Startup: WinZip Quick Pick.lnk = C:\Program Files\WinZip\WZQKPICK.EXE

wkfud.exe - The Marketing Feature for Microsoft Works 6.0 which displayes a few advertisments. This process can be safely terminated. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe

wkdetect.exe - Checks for updates to MS Works. If you want this feature then don't fix this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WkDetect.exe

Close all browser and other windows except for HijackThis, and click "Fix Checked" button to finish the repair. Close the HijackThis application.

Please restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log.

In addition, let me know in detail how your computer system is running after performing the above steps. :)
