I found a few topics that deal with cleaning Virtumundo from a PC. I have already done everything in your "start here first" posting. My question now is, can I just follow the guidelines posted in the other topics I read, or do u suggest that I post MY hijackthis log and have you guys take a look at it just in case there is something else going on with my issue? Just trying to see if I can save u guys some effort and use what has already been outlined.

Thanks

Please post a fresh HJT log and I'll take a look. All Virtumonde infections are best dealt with by checking the log.

Hello bklyngrrl and welcome to Geeks to Go

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have a little malware only. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

To start please download the following programmes, we will run them later. Please save them to a place that you will remember, I suggest the Desktop:

CCleaner
AIMFix

Please double-click the AIMFix.exe file to start the process. Please wait while the programme scans your PC for AIM associated malware. When complete a list will appear, a log will be saved and Finished will appear. Please include that log in your reply.

Right click on this link Del 015 Domains.inf and choose Save (link) As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.musicmatch.com (HKLM)

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

There is almost certainly bound to be some junk (leftover bits and pieces) on your system that is doing nothing but taking up space. I would recommend that you run CCleaner. Install it, update it, check the default setting in the left-hand pane, ensure you uncheck old prefetch data found under the system tab, then click Analyze> Run Cleaner. You may be fairly surprised by how much it finds. Also click Issues then Scan for issues – fix selected issues

Post back a fresh HijackThis log (from normal mode) and I will take another look.

Below is my latest Hijackthis log file, after I ran ccleaner, aimfix (aimfix didn't find anything, so there was nothing for me to post). I also ran del 015. AND hijackthis deleted those files you specified (although the "trusted Zone:" entries were no longer showing up in the scan)
Although I notice that my machine is running alot faster, MS explorer
still refuses to work properly. Although it opens, it will not allow me to surf. It seems that Netscape works fine, however.
Thanks!

Hello again

Your HJT log is clean, but you still have problems.

I wonder if the problem is MSIE itself.

Go into your Control Panel and then to Add and Remove Programs. Click Change or Remove Programs and scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer, click to highlight it, choose remove and a new window will open giving you the option to repair Internet Explorer and finally click OK.

I would also check the security settings within MSIE. Make them all default.

I'll take a look beneath the surface for you just to be sure.

Download:WinPFind

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet!

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient!

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder.

Restart normally and post the contents of WinPFind.txt

Thanks for reopening this topic!

OK, I attmepted to repair MSIE thru Add/Remove programs but it was not listed in the list of programs. I also checked under Add/Remove Window components, and noticed that the only option available under there is to Add or remove access to IE fromthe start menu & desktop. So let me know of another way to uninstall & install IE.

However I still ran the WinPFind scan in Safe mode, and the log file results are as follows, thanks again!:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Hello again

Can I suggest that you have a look in the folder marked Internet Explorer which you should find listed under Program Files probably on your C drive.

In there you may find the ie6setup.exe 481 KB, or the fixie.inf 34KB which you can right click and choose install. If they are not there, try doing a search for them.

Personally, I don’t use MSIE it is just too risky. I choose Firefox 1.5 which I think is faster and a lot safer.

Anyway, WinPfind shows the remnants of a vundo b infection, which must be deleted.

Download
Killbox by Option^Explicit

Please install Killbox by Option^Explicit.
  • Extract the programme to your desktop and double-click on its folder, then double-click on Killbox.exe to start the programme.
  • In the Killbox programme, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hjkmp.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hjkmp.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hjkmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hjkmp.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\hjkmp.tmp

  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Go to Options > Delete on Reboot > Process ALL in list
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" at the reboot now prompt.
If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again.

How are things now?

I Ran Killbox on those files and I am using IE right now, so maybe we have success! Thank you for your help.
Is there any way to check for sure to make sure all the infected files are gone?

Spoke too soon, IE is failing again, will attempt to reinstall.Unfortunately I can't find either of the files (Searched the entire c: including hidden files)you suggested to look for to reinstall IE, any other suggestions?

I agree with you on using Firefox, however, as I'm sure you know there are just some sites that don't run properly in Firefox or Netscape so IE is almost mandatory.

Hello again

It sure sounds as though something on your PC is not quite right. I hear what you say about FF but now that 1.5 is out it is so much better and I am finding it very quick too. BTW, I do not use MSIE ever!

All I can suggest is that while you have FF, uninstall MSIE completely reboot to refresh the registry and then reinstall it and then update it.

I would do this via the Add & Remove Window Components.

If you really want to check every bit of the PC for malware (I don't think it is justified personally) then you could do a MWAV scan.

Here are the instructions if you really want to. Read them carefully and follow them to the letter - don't assume anything.

Please download MWav to a convenient location.

This scan might take around 3+ hours to finish when set to scan everything.
Please run MWav by double-clicking on mwav.exe.
Put a check next to the following items before scanning:
  • Memory
  • Startup Folders
  • Drive - All Local Drives
  • Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
  • System Folders
  • Services
  • Include Sub-Directory
  • Scan All Files
Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the Scan button. This typically will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run until it says it's complete.

On the bottom portion of the window, you will see the lower panel where MWav is listing "infected items". When it's done scanning, please highlight everything in that lower panel and copy them by holding CTRL + C then paste it here. The whole log will be extremely BIG so there is no way to post the log. I just need the infected items list.
