I follow the steps to get ride of Ssk, as I have found on this very forum. The only problem is, when I go to delete the files, it tells me I can't because they are in use by another program. I have triied to remove it in standard and safe mode. I'm seriously getting frustrated by this Surf Side Kick 3. Anyway I can remove it?

adrenaxxx,

Welcome to the GTG Forums, I will be reviewing your HJT log.
Please read "ALL" of the instructions before proceeding:

You will need to print out these instructions for a reference or you can
save them by copying and pasting them into notepad and saving the text file to the desktop.

This process will take a few steps, please take your time and follow the directions in the order posted.
If you don't understand something please ask before performing any task..

Download AIMFix.exe
Save the file to your desktop, do not run it just yet.

Please download Pocket Killbox
Click Here to download Pocket Killbox by Option^Explicit.
Save the file to your desktop, don't run it just yet.

Now please run AIMFix.exe that you saved to your desktop. A pop up box will appear let the program run, once it is finished close the program.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

O2 - BHO: Internet Explorer Web Content Catcher - {FFF4E223-7019-4ce7-BE03-D7D3C8CCE884} - C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [strtas] lock1.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972961.dll

Now close all browsers and open windows except HJT, then click the Fix Checked button. Close HJT.

Go to Start | Add Remove | Programs
Remove the entries for SurfSideKick.

Once you have completed that do the following.

Enable show hidden files and folders:

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

Now remove the following folders if present:

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\ <-- Folder
C:\Program Files\DNS\ <-- Folder

Now lets run Killbox
  • Double-click on Killbox.exe to start the program.
  • In the killbox program, select the Delete on Reboot option.
  • Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Ctrl-C:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lock1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdirectx.sys
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
Your system should now reboot, if not please reboot the system manually.

Once your system has rebooted back into Normal Mode, copy the part below into notepad. Save it as unlegacy.reg (set filetype to "All Files") and then save it to your desktop.

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_MSDIRECTX]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_MSDIRECTX]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\msdirectx]

Doubleclick unlegacy.reg and confirm you want to merge it with the registry.

Once this is done reboot your system once more and then please post a new HJT log by using Add Reply.

Thanks,
rstones12

adrenaxxx,

Did you do the following, go to File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard"

If that doesn't work, type each of the bold files I have listed for removal by following these instructions:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\lock1.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msdirectx.sys

  • Press the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it after each one.
  • When it asks if you would like to delete on reboot, press the YES button, when it asks if you want to reboot now, press the NO button.
  • Do this after each one until you have entered the LAST file path I have listed above.
  • After that LAST file path has been entered, press the YES button at both prompts so that your computer restarts.
Then proceed with the rest of the directions.

Thanks,

Ok, I successfully removed those 2 files. Now, when I double click on unlegacy.reg, this is the exact message I get:
Cannot import C:\Documents and SEttings\Jessica\Desktop\unlegacy.reg: The specified file is not
a registry script.
You can only import binary registry files from within the registry editor.

This is exactly what I put in Notepad to create unlegacy.reg:
CODE
REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_MSDIRECTX]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Enum\Root\LEGACY_MSDIRECTX]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\msdirectx]

Am I missing something?

Jessica

P.S. I will be out of town for a week on Army Active Duty, with no access to my computer or any computer for that matter. I leave tomorrow, 12 Nov 05, and will return Friday, 18 Nov 05. Please don't discontinue or delete this post. I will be back in a week. Thank you for all your help, as well!
