Hi,
My sister's PC has an issue of page hijacking, especially with search engines. WHen you search at say, google, if you search for "potato", you will get a list of pages, but when you click on the result, it takes you to some phony search page (mor-something). She also gets continuous pop up messagesabout "If your registry is incorreect...", and that is followed by pages that deal with "Winfixer", and then they cycled as rapid pop ups. In addition to these symptoms, she gets pages that load for [bleep] sites at seemingly randon times. I ran the elite toolbar remover in safe mode, but only helped slightly. I think there might be several factors at work. (They have 2 teen daughters who IM a lot.) The other symptoms that is maddening is that the whole system is slow and unresponsive at times. AND windows media player loads at start up for every profile on the PC, and I cannot make it not do this. Whew... I think that's everything.

Here's a Hijackthis logfile...

Hi Sam,
thanks for getting back to me. I saw (after I posted my plea for assistance) that there are several things I need to do before I try to get help. (programs to run, etc...) I will go to her house in the next day or so, and perform those tasks. Once I do, should I reply to this thread, or start anew?

thanks!
Brian

In your case, don't bother with those steps. Those are generalized instructions, and while they may clean up a few things for you, they won't solve your main issues.

We will need to take specific steps and use specific tools to get rid of the infections that you have. Just post a fresh hijackthis log when you have access to the computer so that we can note any filenames that may have changed. Then I'll post back(as a reply in this thread) with some instructions for you and we'll start cleaning it up.

You have a few separate issues, so this is going to take a few steps.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddcyy.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\yycdd.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open. If it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

    O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddcyy.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddcyy - C:\WINDOWS\System32\ddcyy.dll

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

OK, A couple things before the logs...

When I open Highjackthis, the "O2-BHO:MSEvents Object -{6DDOBCO6..." entry wasn't listed, so I couldn't check it. But I notice when I re-ran it, it's there. Is this OK? Should I have ran the virusscan's suggested disinfection button? (I didn't).

OK, anyway...
Here's the result of the viruscan...

This is still going to take a few steps, but we are going in the right direction. :tazz:

Download the Pocket Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  • Highlight the lines below and press the Ctrl key and the C key at the same time to copy them to the clipboard:

    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\tthgnijq.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\system32\mlljk.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtsqq.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\Big B\Start Menu\Programs\Lycos Sidesearch.lnk
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\web.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\ysbactivex.dll
      C:\PROGRAM FILES\WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER\wmplayer.exe.tmp
      C:\Documents and Settings\Big B\Application Data\tvmcwrd.dll
      C:\Documents and Settings\Big B\Favorites\Casino & Carrers
      C:\bla.exe
      C:\Documents and Settings\Addie\Desktop\mc-110-12-0000080.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bre.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mljge.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\mseggo.gif
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msfdje.gif
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msglji.gif
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msiaih.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\msnimk.gif
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\paymlgkn.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\tthgnijq.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\vtsqq.dll
      C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\windir32.exe
      C:\WINDOWS\xHIHIFEUFPK.exe

  • Now go to the Killbox application and click on the File menu and then the Paste from Clipboard menu item. In the Full Path of File to Delete box you should see the first file. If you dropdown that box you should see the rest of them. Make sure that they are all there.
  • Click on the Delete on Reboot option and then click on the red circle with a white 'X' in to to delete the files. Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be deleted on next reboot, click YES. When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES. If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message then just restart manually.
Your system will reboot now.

=========

Please click Start -> Control Panel -> Java Plugin
Go to the Cache tab and then click Clear.
Then go to the Update tab and click Update.

=========

Now let's get rid of your remaining Vundo trojan. Please follow the same steps as outlined before. This time you want to enter these filepaths.

First one

C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtsqq.dll

Second one

C:\WINDOWS\System32\qqstv.*

Then fix these lines with Hijackthis.

Be sure to run CleanUp and then Panda's ActiveScan virus can.
And yes, you should allow Panda to disinfect any viruses that it finds.

Finally reboot and post a new hijackthis log, the log from VundoFix, and the log from Panda.

Hi sam. Thanks for helping on this. I did the pocketkillbox, no problem. As far as the Java plugin thing though, I was able to clear the cache, but there was NO UPDATE TAB. So I couldn't click on update, obviously.

In HJT, Some of the lines you listed weren't there (but they were there when I was not in safe mode). So I did it in safe mode and regular mode. Then safe mode again. Don't know if this helped or not, but figured what the heck. Panda's Active scan finds about 43 viruses and 20+ spywares. They are in the log.

OK, Here goes:

HJT:

I see that my sister's Viruscan is way out of date. I'm going to run AVG by grisoft and see wht they get rid of if that's OK.

Thanks,

Yes, that's a good idea to run AVG once it's updated.

Go ahead and use Killbox as before to delete these files.
I don't think Killbox worked correctly last time. Once you paste this list from the clipboard use the down arrow to scroll down and make sure the other files are also listed.

Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot your computer.

Now I need to see a different type of log from Hijackthis
  • Run Hijackthis.
  • Click on "Open the Misc Tools section".
  • Next click on "Open uninstall manager".
  • Press the button 'save list'. It will open a Notepad file.
  • Place the content of that file here in your in your next reply.

Please click Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs and uninstall this program:

Viewpoint (there may be two listings for this program)

First we need to download and prepare some tools that we will need to fix your problem.
  • Please download Ewido Security Suite
    • Install ewido security suite
    • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
      • Install background guard
      • Install scan via context menu
    • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
    • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
      • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
      • Then click on Start Update.
    • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
    • Exit ewido. DO NOT scan yet.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.
    Ewido Manual Updates

  • Please download Adaware SE 1.06
Install Adaware and check for updates, but don't run it yet.

  • Please download CleanUp 4.0
Install CleanUp, but don't run it yet.

==============

Now that you have the right tools we can start fixing your problem.

Please make sure that you can View Hidden Files

Please print out these instructions as the rest of this fix must be done in Safe mode and you won't be able to access the Internet.

Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
* if you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

=============

Once in Safe mode, follow these steps:
  • Run Hijackthis again, click scan, and Put a checkmark next to each of these. Then close all other windows--you should only see HijackThis on your Desktop--and click the Fix Checked button.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [mswspl] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr_.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NI.UWFX5_0001_LP1014] "C:\Documents and Settings\Samantha\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\UX2HQP2J\WinFixer2005ScannerInstall[1].exe"

  • Delete these files (Do not be concerned if they do not exist);

    C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe

  • Now run CleanUp
    IMPORTANT!
CleanUp deletes EVERYTHING out of your temp/temporary folders, it does not make backups.
If you have any documents or programs that are saved in any Temporary Folders, please make a backup of these before running CleanUp

    Running CleanUp
    • Start CleanUp by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
    • When CleanUp starts go to the Options button (right side of CleanUp screen)
    • Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
    • Now place a checkmark next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
      • Delete Cookies
This is optional, if you leave the box checked it will remove all of your cookies, at this point removing cookies is a good idea
      • Empty Recycle Bins
      • Delete Prefetch files
      • Cleanup! All Users
    • Click OK
    • Then click on the CleanUp button. This will take a short while, let it do its thing.
    • When asked to reboot system select No
    • Close CleanUp

  • Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove everything that it finds.

  • Run Ewido:
    • Click on scanner
    • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
    • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Close Ewido.

  • Reboot back into normal mode.

  • Please run this online virus scan - Panda Virus Scan
    • Make sure it is set to clean automatically.
    • There may be files that this scan will not remove. Please save that information to include in your next post.

  • Reboot your computer and post the following information in your next reply:
    • A new Hijackthis log
    • The Ewido log
    • The log from Panda online virus scan

Your Windows Media Player was infected. You can now download and install the updated version.
