Hello, I hope I am in the right place. A friend a dell desktop that is running veeery slowly. She installed Norton Internet Security and ran a scan. The quarantine report listed 15000 security threats and 70000 other threats. We are unable to do anything with that file as far as removal. Norton keeps saying the scan has not been completed, so we run it again, but every time it never finishes. It will get "stuck" and stay on the same file for hours. We have let the scan run overnight and it still doesn't finish. Norton has been no help. Are there too many problems to solve with this computer? Should we just back up and reformat the whole system? The last conversation with Norton said to try and load the quarantine file in order to delete it and if we couldn't, then reformatting is the only other option. Also, when the computer is sitting there with no programs running you can hear the hard drive going a mile a minute. Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

THanks for the advice. I got as far as the Ad Awarwe scan. That took about 18 hrs and had 100,000+ critical items. The system locked up at that point. Now I will go directly to step 5. Thanks again. Mike

Don't worry about all of the other steps. Just post a hijackthis log and we'll take it from there.
