Hi

I've been struggling with this problem for quite sometime now. Would really really appreciate your help.

I'm running Windows XP SP2, with Norton AV, MS Anti-spyware installed. Attempting to remove this particular problem has included - Spybot, a registered version of MWAV.

A full scan (including drive) of MWAV results in the following message:
Object "cydoor.topicks.a Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: Entries Removed.

In the MWAV log file the only corresponding entry is under 'Scanning Registry and File System for Adware/Spyware':

*****
Thu Nov 17 09:25:13 2005 => Offending file found: C:\DOCUME~1\ALLUSE~1\APPLIC~1\symantec\COMMON~1\settings.dat
Thu Nov 17 09:25:13 2005 => System found infected with cydoor.topicks.a Spyware/Adware (settings.dat)! Action taken: Entries Removed.
Thu Nov 17 09:25:13 2005 => Object "cydoor.topicks.a Spyware/Adware" found in File System! Action Taken: Entries Removed.
*****

While action taken says 'entries removed', the spyware continues to exist even after repeated attempts to remove it. The main effect on the functioning is that everytime I boot up the machine and connect to the Internet, it triggers a malfunction in Norton (screenshots attached). I end up needing to kill Norton's process 'ccapp.exe' to be able to function normally.

HJT log in safe mode is appended below. Would really appreciate your help in getting rid of this thing!

Thanks.

That item found by MWav is called a false positive. The settings.dat belongs to Norton so it shouldn't be removed.

I also do not see anything malicious in your log.

Let's run an online virus scan to check.

Please run this online virus scan:
ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here.

ActiveScan only found one bad guy and it was disinfected. Does Norton malfunction each time that file has been removed by MWav or does it always do it when you connect to the Internet regardless of whether or not the file was removed?

Hi Michelle,

Norton malfunctions each time I connect to the net, regardless of whether MWAV attempted to remove the file or not. The only way I can stop the malfunction is by killing the ccapp.exe process - which obviously makes my system further vulnerable.

Hope this helps!
Cheers

Yes, done that. Have also tried setting the 'outgoing mail checking' option in Norton to 'off'. Neither of these have been of any help.

I looked at the attachment again.. The server rejected the messages, it seems like it's all spam..rejected by the filter is definitely spam. I don't think that Norton is actually malfunctioning..it seems to be doing what it's supposed to - scanning returned messages which happen to be spam that were blocked by your ISP server.

It seems as though, someone is using your e-mail address/computer to send spam. ( If we do not find anything on your computer, I strongly advise changing your e-mail address.. ).

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.
