Running XP, latest version [pc is 2 mos old], have Norton Professional, Cyberscrub, Spysweeper, AdAwareSE, SpyBot, Ewindo, EMCO Malware, Trend Micro, Spyblaster, Microsoft Antispyware, and A-squared. Is that a lot of anti-everything programs? Egads.
About a week ago, I got the winfixer ads and it was trying to control my IE, so either Spybot or Blaster found it and supposidly removed it, but my PC runs erratically. The processor runs wildly, even with no programs running. Memory is nearly used up at idle and now I am getting separate "Want to connect?" pop ups, when I am on a broadband connection. I have run every program I think is safe to find and or remove whatever is overtaking my PC, but no luck. I turned off System Restore when I run these programs, hoping it will fully clean the HD, but something is amiss. I have done each step of what you folks advise, prior to contacting you, up to and including HiJack this.

I really need some help.

As an introduction, please note that I am not Superhuman, I do not know everything, but what I do know has taken me years to learn. I am happy to pass on this information to you, but please bear in mind that I am also fallible.

Please note that you should have Administrator rights to perform the fixes. Also note that multiple identity PC’s (family PC’s) present a different problem; please tell me if your PC has more than one individual’s setting, but continue with the fix.

Before we get underway, you may wish to print these instructions for easy reference during the fix, although please be aware that many of the required URLs are hyperlinks in the red names shown on your screen. Part of the fix may require you to be in Safe Mode, which will not allow you to access the internet, or my instructions!

You have the dreaded Virtumonde (Vundo B) infection. Let’s see what we can do with the first sweep.

I note that you are running HijackThis from Temporary Folder; please create a new folder for it (for example C:\Program Files\Hijackthis\Hijackthis.exe) and move the programme into it. It is very important you do this before anything else since backup files can be deleted if they are not within their own folder!

Firstly could you please disable Microsoft Antispyware from running during the fix, it may just hinder our attempts to change anything. Right click on the icon (looks like an archery target) in the task bar and click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) then click on Disable Real-time Protection. To re enable it, you follow the same steps but click on Enable Real-time Protection.

Please also disable Spy Sweeper and SpyCatcher for the same reasons.

When your PC has been declared clean, please only enable one of those three programmes to run in real-time. All others should be used as “on demand” scanners. Having more than one antispyware programme running in real-time will cause slowness and even conflicts.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

  Press enter to continue....
  
  

• At this point press enter once.
  
• Next you will see:
  

  Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programmes menu).
Set the programme up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the programme.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log from normal mode and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thank you so much for replying to my problem. I have followed each of your steps, but I cannot run VundoFix in the safe mode. I extracted it to my desktop as you instructed, but it does not appear in Safe Mode. I even hit "Start", "Run" and entered Vundofix.exe"...no such program it tells me. I have entered Safe Mode both as Administrator and as "me" in my normal user mode. No luck.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sorry, I couldn't resist. Rather than attempt to repsir your safe mode problem, please continue in normal mode. It works OK both ways, it's just that I prefer working in safe mode with fewer applications loaded giving fewer problems potentially.

Well, you Do have my name right...unlucky. I managed to run Vundofix, by making it a progarm file. I also ran HJT, but my problems remain. Dialer pops up [I'm on Broad band] and the PC is so slow, especially when attempting to open IE.

Based upon the last HJT log, here is the tidy-up fix. Are you still getting lots of Pop-ups?

Rescan with HijackThis. Close all programmes leaving only HijackThis running. Place a checkmark or tick against the following:

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayx.dll (file missing)
O20 - Winlogon Notify: ddayx - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddayx.dll (file missing)

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Download:
RKFiles.zip

Create a new folder called C:\Antispyware\RKFiles

Extract the contents of RKFiles.zip into this new RKFiles folder.

Please now reboot into safe mode. Here's how:

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap the F8 key. A menu should appear where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Open the C:\Antispyware\RKFiles folder * Locate and double-click the RKFILES.BAT to run this tool.
* Sit back and wait until it has finished.
* When it is finally finished a text file will open.
* Save the contents of that text file.

N.B.: It should save by default to C:\Log.txt

Reboot back to Normal Mode.

Reboot normally.

So, I want logs for ActiveScan, VundoFix, RKfiles and finally a fresh HJT log.

Thank you again. I did as you asked and the logs will follow, but after I completed the tasks and attempted to open IE, I received the following pop-up:

hpqgalry.exe common language runtime debugging services application has generated an excepton that could not be handled.
Process id=0x8ac(2220), thread id=0x53c(1340).

Click OK to terminate the application.
Click cancel to debug the application.

I clicked cancel and got the following:

hpqgalry.exe no debugger found. Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debigger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2(2).
Please check computer settings. cordbg.exe la0x8ac

Under that pop-up was a small blue screen that read as follows:

The program has encountered an unexpected error. Parameter cannot be null.
Parameter name: serialization stream


You had asked if I receive pop-ups, no not until these, with the exception of the dialer wanting to connect, once I'm already on line.
If I cancel the dialer, it disconnects me from my broadband connection.
Also, presently, it takes more than 30 secodns to open IE and often, but not always, after it opens and I'm connected that crazy dialer pop-up appears.

Firstly your HJT log is clean.

The problem you have with MSIE could be many things but it looks like it in some way involves Hewlett Packard.

I want you to download Mozilla Firefox and use that for your browser while we try and correct this problem.

When installing, please allow the transfer of passwords, form completion and cookies to it.

Is Firefox working OK? If so, from now on use Firefox

Can you let me have a list of all HP products that you have?

Go into your Control Panel and then to Add and Remove Programs. Click Change or Remove Programs and scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer, click to highlight it, choose remove and a new window will open giving you the option to repair Internet Explorer and finally click OK.

First, thank you again for the help. My PC appears to run better, altho IE is still a pain. I tried Firefox and despite it's peculiarities, it does seem to run smoother. With regard to HP applications, my PC shows: HP image Zone 4.2, HP PSC & Officejet 4.2, HP Help & Support, HP Document Viewer, HP Totalcare, HP Director, the last three being desktop icons but not found in Add/Remove Programs. Also, oddly, I cannot find MSIE in the Add/Remove Programs panel. Should I just download a new version?

Do you think because HP uses Netscape for it's default web page, this "redirect" from IE to Netscape is giving me headaches?

If you have to have MSIE download a fresh version, it may help. I think what you need to do is uninstall everything HP and then re-install them, one by one until the problem hits again. Then you will know which item caused the problem. My guess is HP image Zone 4.2

I would advise you to stick with FF, it is much safer and you'll soon get used to it. If you go to https://addons.mozil...ication=firefox you'll find some really good extensions.

I am not aware of any Netscape default setting with MSIE. That would be a very brave move by any PC company to do.

I am virtually exclusive FF, although MSN Messenger is embedded with MSIE. As soon as that changes (if ever) I will uninstall it.

How is your PC running now?
