i dont know how i got infected with winfixer but i just realized today that it was malware. my internet connection and my computer has been slowed down considerably, please help!

Before we start, I notice you are running 2 AntiVirus products - Norton and AVG Free. Having more than 1 Antivirus product installed is a bad thing and can actually let through more viruses

Please choose one of these to keep and uninstall the other using Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs. If you have paid for Norton, you may wish to keep that. I use AVG Free so can recommend that personally.

Secondly, it is not clear from your log if you are running a firewall. This is essential to prevent unauthorised internet access both to and from your computer. If you do not have a firewall installed, please install a good free one, otherwise you are wide open to re-infection and we are both wasting our time. Personally, I use ZoneAlarm which is free and well respected. ZoneAlarm will popup an alert each time a program tries to access the internet. If you recognise the program then you can allow access - if you do not, then you should deny access.

Ok, once you have uninstalled the unwanted AntiVirus product and have got a firewall installed, please continue with the instructions below :

I have a question regarding something called ADSpider in your log. Is this a product or name you recognise and have installed on your computer? The same question for HncUpdate Please let me know in your next post.

I also notice you are running LimeWire P2P application. Some P2P clients are known to come bundled with Adware & Spyware (this includes some versions of LimeWire). Please read this article which explains further. If necessary, uninstall LimeWire until after you are clean.

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Preparation

I notice you are running Microsoft AntiSpyware. The Real Time protection feature can interfere with the fix, so please disable this before continuing (we will re-enable after the fix) by doing the following :

• Right-click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon in your System Tray (it looks like a Red/Yellow/Black target)
• Click on Security Agents Status (Enabled) and click on Disable Real-time Protection

To disable Norton AntiVirus Script Blocking :

• Start Norton AntiVirus. If Norton AntiVirus is installed as part of Norton SystemWorks or Norton Internet Security, then start that program.
• Click Options.
• If you see a menu, click Norton AntiVirus.
• In the left pane, click Script Blocking.
• In the right pane, uncheck Enable Script Blocking (recommended).
• Click OK.

Download and install CleanUp!

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

The Fix

Run VundoFix :

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning.

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:

Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):

• Empty Recycle Bins
• Delete Cookies
• Delete Prefetch files
• Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

The ADSpider that you were questioning was a Hijacker/Malware removal tool but it could not remove WinFixer (I removed the ADSpider AVG kept on recognizing it as a virus threat). Also, HNC is an update for my korean word processing program.

As suggested, I have installed ZoneAlarm as well as deleting my expired version of Norton Antivirus

I'll proceed with the instructions as soon as I have disabled the real time update of the Microsoft Antispyware.

Good job on installing Zone Alarm and for removing Norton. You now have a good free Firewall and Antivirus package - the first 2 critical lines of defence

I can still see Microsoft Antispyware in your HJT log. This can interfere with the fix (and this may be why some of the fixed HJT items have not been removed properly). Please make sure you follow my earlier instructions to disable the real time protection. We will re-enable it after the fix.

Please print these instructions for use in Safe Mode

To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:

• Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
• Double-click on the My Computer icon.
• Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
• After the new window appears select the View tab.
• Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
• Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
• Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
• Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.

Please reboot into Safe Mode. To do this, restart your computer and as soon as it begins booting up, continously tap the F8 key until a menu appears. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Run HJT and place a check next to the following items :

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

You must stay on top of your updates at all times, for the above mentioned applications.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

This can be accessed by going to Windows Updates and following the prompts.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :
