I recently had a spyware/trojan infection complete with the pretty blue desktop and the annoying reminder from XP that i had a spyware infection. I have run several different software packages (Adaware, MS AntiSpyware, Spybot, AVG, HouseCall). Most of which was done in Safe Mode. I also ran CWSShredder and AboutBuster. (Although Aboutbuster gave me a .ocx error when it finished) I THINK i've rounded up and removed my infection. I've read thru many posts here and have followed every recommendation i could find. I have restored my desktop also. I do Tech Support for a major motherboard company and with the help of a few engineers got everything cleared up. Although they weren't much help. Below is my HJT log please let me know if anything still needs to be taken care of.

**UPDATE**

Just ran Pandasoft online and got these results:

Incident Status Location

Adware:adware/antivirus-gold Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html
Adware:adware/secure32 Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html
Adware:adware/isearch Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\tool2.exe
Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.EV Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\************\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\p2qkvt4b.default\Mail\Local Folders\Inbox[price.cpl]
Adware:Adware/SpySheriff Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\***********\Local Settings\Temp\temp.fr4B27\heur002.dll
Adware:Adware/SpySheriff Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\************\Local Settings\Temp\temp.frED5B\heur002.dll
Adware:Adware/SpySheriff Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\desktop.html
Adware:Adware/Secure32 Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\secure32.html
Adware:Adware/SpywareNo Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\tool2.exe

Oddly enough, only Pandsoft finds this virus. And all info on this virus is only available from Pandasoft.

****UPDATE****

Ran TrojanHunter and it didn't find it. Also every spyware doesn't find these other files. And I guess thru a series of restarts in Safe Mode my desktop is now stuck in Classic Mode. Although it says I can switch to XP mode it doesn't full switch.

Hi there Intrepid and sorry for the delay.
Looks like you still have a few remants of this lingering

Download smitRem.exe (Developed by noahdfear ) and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Make sure all open windows are closed and click on " Fix Checked"

Next,
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

OK, got everything done. One thing that was annoying was the pandasoft. The Activescan is online but doesn't clean. Sooooo I dl'd the trial version (as evident in the new HJT log) and it disinfected the virus found by the active scan. And my desktop is still square. Not the pretty XP look. Although I must say that everything looks like XP (menus and such) but they just have a square look, not the rounded look of XP. Adaware found 1 object. Here's the logs with HJT first:

CLEAN! :tazz:

And last but not least Pandasoft:

Incident Status Location

Virus:Trj/Mitglieder.EV Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\Mike McQuillen\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\p2qkvt4b.default\Mail\Local Folders\Inbox[price.cpl]

As I said before, I did get the trialversion of Pandasoft. It did find this and disinfect it, so I assume it's ok to use my email again. i'll wait to see what you say first tho. Many thanks for your help. You guys are the best ! !

Disregard the Ewido installed...I'll be uninstalling it and Pandasoft and going back to AVG after this.

EDIT:
Now Pandasoft is finding C:\Windows\Killapp.exe I am able to find sketchy info on this file at best. Some of it relates to a trojan some relates to a file with SB, but SB says it's not their file. I told Panda to delete it but I dont think it did

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, Got a bit tied up last night,
Could you post a fresh HJT log for me please, Could you save the log from Active after you scan with it and post in here as well please

Although I must say that everything looks like XP (menus and such) but they just have a square look, not the rounded look of XP.

See if this helps,
Go to Start < control Panel <system<advanced < Performance < settings <Visual Effects.
In the list double check that the following is checked "Use Visual Styles on Windows and buttons" if not place a check next to it,
Let me know if that helps

Oh BTW you didn't need to do the trial of panda I just wanted to see the log from it sorry for the confusion on that

WIndows is still square, if need be I can post a SS of what I"m taling about. I've removed Ewido and Panda (trial) for now. Panda makes my system run ungodly slow. Here is a HJT from just a few mins ago. I'll do another ActiveScan tonight. Gotta get to work right now. Thanks for all your help so far.

Here is a pic of what I'm talking about.

http://img233.images...desktop2ad1.jpg

When I ran ActiveScan it didn't find anything so it didn't give me an option to save a logfile.

Also, would Avast Anti-Virus be any better than AVG? I've used AVG for some time now and it just doesn't seem to be very useful.

I been using AVG and it has been doing a good job for me,

Lets see if we can get your dispaly squared away, Go to Start>>Control Panel>>Display>> Under Themes make sure that it is set for Windows XP , Next go to Appearance make sure Windows and Buttons is set for Windows XP Style, Click Apply, click OK,
Let me know if that does the trck for you
