Hello and thanks in advance for your help.

My computer is running really slowly and I keep getting lots of popups (Winfixer and 888.com casino especially). When I scanned my computer, McAfee antivirus found YSBar, ISTbar and generic.cb but it seemed to have got rid of everything (ie, nothing showed up on subsequent scans), but I'm still getting the popups and the computer is really slow. I found Symantec removal instructions online and followed those instructions, removing the indicated registry keys etc., but to no avail. I have also read through other threads and tried to follow the advice given on those (ran Spybot, Adaware SE, CWShredder, Cleanup, online BitDefender scan etc), but again had no success. I also read on a thread that the version of Java RE on my computer was vulnerable so I unintalled it and downloaded the new version.
I have now run HijackThis and Ewido and have pasted the logs below. I'm getting really worried now!

Hi alighirl and Welcome to GeekstoGo!

Download this program:

Submit Files Packer
http://www.safer-net...g/files/sfp.zip

Highlight the entries listed below in bold and right-click,then select Copy.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstrs.*
C:\WINDOWS\System32\srtss.*

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

I will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to yourmembername.cab (for example Monster.cab).

Then go to:
http://www.bleepingc...mit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to this file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button.

After submitting the files-> Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.

  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstrs.dll

  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.

  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\System32\srtss.*
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. For example, if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstrs.dll

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: sstrs - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstrs.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi and thanks for your help.

I submitted the files as requested and downloaded VUndoFix, but am having problems getting into safe mode.

When I press F8 on Startup I have the choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking or Safe Mode with Command Prompt. I choose Safe Mode and get the Windows Screen where I can login as Administrator or User. I have tried both, but all I get is a black screen with 'Safe Mode' written in each corner and the Windows XP name at the top. Also, just after I select Adminstrator or User a Windows Message Box pops up but then disappears before I can read what it says - I can see that it has Yes and No buttons at the bottom. Do you have any idea what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks so much for uploading those files, first successful upload of a complete set yet! :tazz:

Seems to be a new thing with Vundo these days, lets try another route.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):
  • Click the Free Trial link on the right - next to "SpySweeper for Home Computers" to download the program.
  • Double-click the file to install it as follows:
    • Click "Next", read the agreement, Click "Next"
    • Choose "Custom" click "Next".
    • Leave the default installation directory as it is, then click "Next".
    • UNcheck "Run SpySweeper at Windows Startup" and "Add Sweep for Spyware to Windows Explorer Context Menu". Click "Next".
    • On the following screen you can leave the e-mail address field blank, if you wish. Click "Next".
    • Finally, click "Install"
  • Once the program is installed, it will open.
  • It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
  • Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
  • Click the Sweep Options tab.
  • Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
    • Sweep Memory
    • Sweep Registry
    • Sweep Cookies
    • Sweep All User Accounts
    • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
    • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
    • Sweep for Rootkits
    • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
  • Click Sweep Now on the left side.
  • Click the Start button.
  • When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
  • Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
  • It will remove all of the items found.
  • Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
  • Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
  • Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

OK, before I saw your post above I had another try in Safe Mode (I entered via msconfig) and managed to run VUndofix via Task Manager (ie, I pressed Ctrl Alt Del then Run new task...Browse...KillVUndo.bat). When I exited the Hijackthis and KillVUndo programs I manually rebooted, but to get back to normal mode I had to uncheck 'safeboot' via msconfig. The computer then restarted in Normal Mode but i got a Windows Message Box entitled System Configuration Utility. I can't remember exactly what it said (DUH!..sorry!) but it was something like the configuration had been changed and to get into normal mode the computer would restart and do a restore. I was prompted to 'Exit and Restart' or 'Exit without Restart'. I chose the latter (no restart) and continued with your instructions and have posted the results below.

I wish I could say whats really on my mind but dayum girl you go! :tazz:

Thats extremly intuitive thinking on your part,I am totally impressed!

You got Vundo with that whack!

I wanna see that Dll that Panda IDed please.

Can you use SFP and Upload it?

Highlight the entries listed below in bold and right-click,then select Copy.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvwvw.dll

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

I will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to yourmembername.cab (for example Monster.cab).

Then go to:
http://www.bleepingc...mit-malware.php
and fill in the required fields and browse to this file on your desktop. Finally click on the Send File button.

Going back to Safe Mode shouldnt be a problem anymore,F8 should work fine.

Lets see what else is laying around in there.

Download WinPFind:
http://www.bleepingc...es/winpfind.php

Right Click the Zip Folder and Select "Extract All"

Don't use it yet

Reboot into SAFE MODE(Tap F8 when restarting)
Here is a link on how to boot into Safe Mode:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

From the WinPFind folder-> Doubleclick WinPFind.exe and Click "Start Scan"

It will scan the entire System, so please be patient

One you see "Scan Complete"-> a log (WinPFind.txt) will be automatically generated in the WinPFind folder

Post the results of the WinPFind Scan and let me know if you were able to upoload the file?

OK, I sent the file you requested and ran WinPFind in Safe Mode (the desktop was present in Safe Mode this time). The log is posted below.

When I rebooted after Safe Mode I got the same System Configuration Utility Box as before. It says that I am in Selective start-up mode because I changed the configuration and I should click on Normal Mode in msconfig and that this will undo the changes I made. Does this mean it will cancel all the removal steps we have taken? I will stay in this mode until you reply. Once again, thanks for your patience and your help.

OK, here the results of those scans are pasted below.

Service load: 0% 100%

File: quicksmtp.exe
Status: MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took

a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is

suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force

the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner

issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless.

Caution is advised, however.)

OK,lets get rid of what we know is crap!

Make sure Windows is Showing Hidden Files
http://www.bleepingc...al62.html#winxp

Locate and Delete---> C:\WINDOWS\system32\wvwvw.dll

To be honest, the bulk of searches says get rid of---> C:\WINDOWS\quicksmtp.exe

That call is yours,I can only go by what I see.

You can locate the file and right click on it,select properties and look through all the info there.

If you cant associate it with something legit on the system and it only has a Date Created and File Size in the property attributes, then chances are,it dont belong.

Basically you can delete the file but leave it be in the recycle bin, restart the PC,use all your normal apps and if you dont recieve an error, the file probably doesnt belong or is uneeded.

OK, I checked the Properties of the smtp.exe file and it said it was created in April 2005 and Modified in January 2005??? I deleted the three files and rebooted and it doesn't seem to have done any harm. However, I have just had a popup (for Premier Insurance) appear as I was typing this reply. I don't know if it's the same thing though because it had a little grey box at the bottom saying that 'this advert is not brought to you by the site you are viewing' or words to that effect. I have never seen this with the Winfixer or 888.com popups. Or is that just wishful thinking?

I'm sorry to report that the popups are appearing again (Cassava and Casino.net this time)! I had a look to make sure I deleted the three files (quicksmtp.exe, wvwvw.dll and ptMpk) and the ptMpk file is back! I know I definitely deleted it because it is still in my Recycle bin.
What have I done wrong?
Should I delete ptMpk again?

On a positive note, my computer does seem to be faster, so something has definitely improved.

Lets try running this tool and see what it yields us.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.gee.../aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please Scan the system again with WinPFind and then reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder and the results of the WinPFind Scan.
