I unfortunately downloaded a dodgy file, and it infected my comp... here's my logfile:

First i had SpySheriff, which i think i've got rid off. however my browser is redirecting to ads etc and my comp is running very slow.

and unfortunately after following another websites directions to rid myself of SpySheriff i've caused some other problems. On startup i get a popup missing this file: ""C:\WINDOWS\system\MpPMSNSv.dll",DllGetVersion" and also my Windows XP appearance is gone (so the toolbar and stuff are in old school windows look). Is there somewhere i can download the files to get the two default XP appearances?

Bill,

You have a couple infections that need attention. Let's get the SpySheriff one totally cleaned up then get the other next.

You are running Microsoft AntiSpyware, which is good, but it needs to be disabled to prevent it from interfering with fixes:

Disable Microsoft AntiSpyware
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Options, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck "Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended)".
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck "Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended)".
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
You can re-enable Microsoft AntiSpyware after your system has been cleaned.


You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:

Again, do NOT run a scan yet.


Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

Now open Ewido Security Suite
  • Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
  • If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  • When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Save that file for us later.
  • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


Restart your computer in normal mode.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.


Finally please post these logs for me:
1) A new HijackThis log
2) The log from the Ewido scan
3) The log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.
4) The l2mfix log
