I recently experienced the WinFixer/Vundu problems and by following the forum direction i think i was able to remove it safely. I ran Norton and ActiveScan and they didn't detect anything. I am just wondering if i removed everything, so i am posting the HijackThis log file. If you can, just look over it and see if there is anything uncanny and malicious left. Thank you.

It doesn't really need help to begin with. Simply i just want to make sure i completely removed the threat and there aren't any potential threats still lurking deep inside. The computer sped up greatly and no more win-fixer popups or vundu threats appeared. I ran clean-up, pest control, ad-aware, and three firewalls, but i just want to make sure it's gone for sure. Thank's. Here's the new log. Sorry for the delay. Additinally, do you know anything about how effective is Pest Patrol? I am constantly running it and it works fine just like all the regular spyware removal soft, but it is not mentioned in any of the malware site. it is inferior to other programs, or simply not as popular?

just realised the winfixer file is still in there. I'll repeat the procedure one more time.

*I ran the program again three times and twice in safe mode. For some reason, even if i check the file and select to fix it, the entry is still there when i restart. I ran clean-up again and made sure all the temp files and folders were gone, even the hidden ones. For some reason there wasn't a folder labeled Content.IE5 in the Temporary Internet Files, so i am correct in assuming the entry in HijackThis is calling a nonexisting file? Is there any other way to remove the entry, or is it just some kind of unknown bug?

Boot into safe mode.

Fire up hijack this, press scan only and place a check next to this.

Close all bowsers and click fix on hijack this, then reboot back to reg mode and send me a new log.

It's still there for some reason. As is said in the previous post, the entry just keeps reacurring. i tried deletein, rebooting, and scanning again. i tried scanning, deleting, and scanning again without delete. i tried them all in safe mode as well. Result is the same and the entry is just stuck there. Are there any other ways to removing or quarantining the problems? Also, what does the "-nag" part of the entry mean?

*if this seems very uncanny, it can prossibly be due to human error. This is not my problem and i am just helping a friend of mine who doesn't understand anything about computers. I guide her by phone, but i am not sure she follows it all exactly. If this can wait until saturday i can try doing it myself and give you the log. The other forum entrees also tell users to run WebRoot SpySweeper to remove their problems. Would running the sweeper help in this case?

Hi Eugene

ok lets try spysweeper and see what it shows us.

Please download WebRoot SpySweeper from HERE (It's a 2 week trial):

• Install it. Once the program is installed, it will open.
• It will prompt you to update to the latest definitions, click Yes.
• Once the definitions are installed, click Options on the left side.
• Click the Sweep Options tab.
• Under What to Sweep please put a check next to the following:
  • Sweep Memory
  • Sweep Registry
  • Sweep Cookies
  • Sweep All User Accounts
  • Enable Direct Disk Sweeping
  • Sweep Contents of Compressed Files
  • Sweep for Rootkits
  • Please UNCHECK Do not Sweep System Restore Folder.
• Click Sweep Now on the left side.
• Click the Start button.
• When it's done scanning, click the Next button.
• Make sure everything has a check next to it, then click the Next button.
• It will remove all of the items found.
• Click Session Log in the upper right corner, copy everything in that window.
• Click the Summary tab and click Finish.
• Paste the contents of the session log you copied into your next reply.

Show me the spysweeper log and a new hijack log afterwards please.

Hijack This couldn't remove the winfixer object by itself, so i had to open the registry and delete all winfixer pertaining keys manually. There were in fact two that had "winfixer" in the path name. So far it all works perfectly, and the new Winfixer log seems free of the entry. I already posted the spysweeper log above and hopefully it will all be fine now. Thanks a lot for your help. My only remaining question is where did the threat originate? I am running three spyware programs, norton firewall, and IE is mostly patched up. How come the virus still got in? Is there any way to prevent that in the future, as i already seem to have enough inside protection?

It really does'nt matter how tight of a ship you run, some stuff will get through. Staying away from stuff like [bleep] or crack sites as well as any peer to peer sharing applications is a good place to start, those are the big 3 in my opinion. I will just attach a closing speech, any of these applications are good to have on your machine, make sure to read all the way through.

Since your issues have been addressed and you are ready to travel the net again, I will just give you a few ideas on how to stay safe out there. Best of all these programs are all readily available on the net for free

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

It is vitally important to stay on top of your critical updates provided by microsoft.

To add to the performance of your computer, i suggest a weekly maintenance program. Run this tool. Ccleaner

Lastly a second opinion on the Antivirus that you have chosen. I suggest running these online virus scans periodically, just to make sure that the av is doing a proper job, of keeping you safe :
