I need help. First I do not know how to run a Hijack THis Log. I assume I have to post that log first before I can get help removing Virtumondo.c. Please help. I have not been able to solve my problem on my own.

Hi RJALANCO and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

This is going to take a few post to clean as you have more that one infection, but we will get you cleaned up :tazz:

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
  • This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
  • After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
  • Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
  • You will first be presented with a warning.
    It should look like this

    VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
    Press enter to continue....

  • At this point press enter one time.
  • Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
    and then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    • C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstqq.dll
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum
    staff then press enter:

  • At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):C:\WINDOWS\System32\qqtss.*

This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was vundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*
  • Press Enter to continue with the fix.
  • The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.
  • In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {FC148228-87E1-4D00-AC06-58DCAA52A4D1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstqq.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: awtss - awtss.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: sstqq - C:\WINDOWS\System32\sstqq.dll
  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
  • Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Excal, glad to hear you are on the case. I must tell you that I grew impatient and tried to fix the problem on my own but again failed. Viewing other posts on this website dealing with the same problem I thought I might be able to figure it out but I've probably made things worse. So....rather than proceed with your instructions I am providing new Hijack This Log and will refrain from doing anything until I hear back from you. I appreciate very much your help.

Here is the new log:

Excal,

The various logs are below. Additionally, there were two lines in the Hijack This Log that I was unable to find and check that were in your last thread. One line was an 04 HKLM ...irasyncd.exe and the second was HKCU\..|Run: [irasyncd]....

It seems as though there are still some issues with my computer that need to be fixed. There is something screwy going on with Notepad.

Anyhow, I await your advise.

Thanks again.

One other question, should I do regarding having files hidden? As part of your process I had to unhide all files. It seemed as though doing so might be creating some security risk. I believe all files are unhidden as I have done nothing to reverse your instructions. Please advise.

if you could, just leave them unhidden until we are done, unless you want to rehide them, then unhide them when i repost instructions to you. There is a security risk in regards to somone deleting a file that could be important to the OS, but only if they have access to your machine.

Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

Windows Overlay Components

Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\PROGRAM FILES\CMSystem
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\cache32dsrf4535dfs
C:\Documents and Settings\Richard A. Joseph\Favorites\1111
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\O

Please remove just the files from the following paths using Windows Explorer (if present):

C:\WINDOWS\pf78.exe
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\bho.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\O.BAT
C:\WINDOWS\demsvzb.exe

reboot and please post a fresh HiJackthis log. Let me know exactly how your machine is running.

thanks,

:tazz:

Excal,

Below is the HiJackthis log. I could not find the CMSystem or O folders of the demsvzb.exe file. The other files and folders were deleted.

Does it look clean? Also, is there anything I should be doing to protect my computer now, assuming it is clean? For example, hide files, etc.

Thanks,

RJ

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read So how did I get infected in the first place?

I guess one more thing. When I ran Microsoft AntiSPyware I found no problem files, however, with Ad-adware there were a bunch of critical files to remove. I removed the same but am concerned they or others might come back. Is that just the way it goes or should I post info after a new scan?
