Hi I hope someone can help me with the huge adware problem I've been having for over a month. There are 2 symptoms. The first, which was huge animated flash ads that popped up in the middle of the screen, I was able to "fix" by uninstalling macromedia flash player. The second is a million popup websites, usually starting by connecting to ad.yieldmanager.com and then going to a different advertiser. I have spybot, adaware, microsoft antispyware, xoftspy, and spyware blaster. spybot and xoftspy are the only ones that ever find anything, though on next scan they usually think the system's clean, and i'm still getting popups. safe mode or not same result. Also windows updates will try to install for a while and then, fail. Ive been using mac osx86 lately because of this (which is cool, but my wifi card isnt supported, so no internet). So anyways if anyone can help...would be grreatly appreciated. Heres my hijackthis log:

Hi inity
Welcome to GeeksToGo! I will be helping you in cleaning up your computer!

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so!

If after the reboot the desktop icons dont dissappear or the log does not pop up then in the l2mfix folder double click the second.bat file to continue with the fix.

OK did it. One thing though - I forgot to make sure the desktop icons disapeared on reboot, the log however did pop up so i'm assuming i shouldn't have to run the second.bat file. Before I rebooted, lmfix gave me the message please remove missing file 020 with hijackthis. What's next, am I in the clear? So far I havent seen any popups. Thanks again for your help.

Alrighty, scan with HJT, and place a check next to the following items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://mshtml.dll/blank.htm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = res://mshtml.dll/blank.htm
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = res://mshtml.dll/blank.htm
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Explorer - C:\WINDOWS\system32\p88qlil518q.dll (file missing)

Then, make sure all browser windows and other applications are closed, and click the Fix Checked button.

Reboot, and post a fresh HJT log.

Congrats! Your log is clean!

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
  • Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
  • AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
  • SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
  • SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
  • IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
  • CleanUP! - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
  • Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein
