Welcome to G2G forums. I look forward to cleaning you up.

First we need to move HJT into its own folder
Create a new folder on your desktop... right click somewhere in the empty area of your desktop and choose New>Folder. Give it a simple name like HJT or something easy to remember.

Then either move the current HJT file into that directory or go to to the folder you just created and download HJT from here:

Go into add/remove programs and look for these, if there uninstall them:

MS Updates
MS AUpdate
ISTbar


Please run full scans with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot-S&D as follows:
(If you already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 and Spybot 1.4 installed, you can skip the installation steps. If you don't, please uninstall your old versions and install the new ones from the links below.)

Full Ad-Aware Scan
Please download Ad-Aware SE) and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. (Note that Ad-Aware SE is free for non-commercial, non-governmental, and non-educational use.) If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please install Build 1.06r1.

1) Run the Webupdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon, Click connect, Click OK, Click Finish.)

2) Set up the Configurations (Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

• General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
• Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now"

• Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
• Select "Search for low-risk threats"
• Select "Perform full system scan"
• Click Next

4) When the scan has completed, select Next.

• In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
• Check all objects found in the Critical Objects tab that you wish to remove
• Click Next, Click OK.
• Restart the computer

Spybot Full Scan
Next, please download Spybot-S&D from here:

Install Spybot-S&D and run it. Select "Search for updates" and then select all available updates. Click on the drop-down box in the top center to choose a download location nearest to you. Then click "Download updates". When all updates have downloaded, close Spybot-S&D, and then run it again. Click on "Check for problems". When the scan has finished, select any entries listed in red and click "Fix selected problems". Then please restart your computer again.

You have the latest version of VX2. Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Let's keep the pressure on until you are totally clean.

Clean out temporary files. Go to Start > Run and type in the box: cleanmgr. Let it scan your system for files to remove. Make sure these 3 are checked and then press *ok* to remove:

Temporary Files
Temporary Internet Files
Recycle Bin

Scan with HijackThis again and place a check next to these items:

You have an infected file that is indicative of the Smitfraud infection.

You may want to print out or make a copy of these instructions before starting, because you will not be able to connect to the internet during most of this fix.

Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Update Ewido now. We will run it later.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again --- this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish --- this may take a while; please be patient.

Now open Ewido Security Suite

• Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
• If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
• When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Save that file for us later.
• Close Ewido

Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.


Restart your computer in normal mode.

I forgot to ask for a log from you...but it should still be on your computer. Also your log got shorter so I need to get you out of seletive startup if you are there now:

Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal

Please look carefully at this post for some excellent preventative measures to take so you do not get infected again.
Prevention is good :up:

To reduce the re-infection potential for malware and protect yourself against spyware, here are a few helpful suggestions:

• Keep Windows and Internet Explorer current with the latest critical security updates from Microsoft. This will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You CANNOT complete this update using an alternate browser.

• Run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep its definitions up-to-date. If you are thinking about switching, there are a some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.

• In addtion to using Ad-aware consider using another free malware scanning/removal program:
