The scans and removals got rid of a lot of stuff, but ~ 30 min after reboot, NortonAV alerts that Adware.QoolAid has reappeared.(originally it showed up immediately.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe.
When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to start scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while.
When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Sam, thanks for responding.

I ran the WinPFind scan twice as instructed and both times it posted an error message and then just sat there spinning it's wheels (hourglass displayed)- even though the Task Manager indicated it was 'Running'. After ~15 min I did a print screen and closed the program.

The error message reads "Invalid data type for 'Flag'". There was no .txt file. I've attached the screen shot.

Is there an alternative?

Download Track qoo and extract it to your desktop.

Double Click on "Track qoo.vbs"

Note - If you Antivirus has Script Blocking, you will get a Pop Up Windows asking you what to do. Allow this Entire Script to Run, its harmless!

Wait a few seconds and a notepad page will pop up, Copy & Paste those results and place them in your next reply along with a new hijackthis log.

I've done the new scans. First, I've noted another symptom that may mean something so here it is for what it's worth - iTunes doesn't update my iPod, even though it claims to have done so. In the beginning before I made my first post, iTunes had become inoperable (wouldn't stay open) while the worse of the QoolAid (and other malware) attacks were occuring. Still prior to my first post, it had started opening again after running Eiwdo - but it is still somehow messed up.

The site has been down at times recently, so it's probably not on your end.

Please open Notepad, and copy/paste the code in the box below into a new text file. Save it as KillQoo.reg (set Filetype to "All Files") and save it on your Desktop.

Now Locate and DoubleClick KillQoo.reg-> Allow it to merge into the Registry!



Download KillBox and unzip it to your desktop.

Open Killbox and select the Delete on reboot option.
Copy and paste the following file to the field labeled "Full path of file to delete"

C:\WINDOWS\system32\gwerm.dll

Press the Delete button (the button that looks like a red circle with a white X in it).
A first dialog box will ask if you want to delete the file on reboot, press the YES button.
A second dialog box will ask you if you want to REBOOT now. Press the YES button.

Your computer will reboot.



Please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
• If you have trouble getting into Safe mode go here for more info.

Run a full scan with Ewido in Safe mode. Save the log and post it here in your next reply.

Reboot back to normal mode. Let me know how things are working for you.

Please excuse the time lapse. I think things are looking good. I followed your directions, but had to shutdown the Eiwdo scan before it had finished. At the time it had found 6 items which it cleaned up before closing. However it left no log and so I never found out what they were. The next time I booted the computer (in Safe Mode) I ran the scan again and nothing was found, so that is all the log stated. Is there anything further that i should do?

If Ewido is coming up clean and your computer is running well then I think we can safely assume you're in the clear!

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

• Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
