Yesterday I had the misfortune of having Winhound install itself on my computer. As others have posted, it hijacked my desktop, replacing it with a black background and a link to their "spyware removal" site. I also had a red-dot icon in my system tray that warned me that I was infected.

Anti-spwyare/virus programs I have run include: Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security (current), AdAware, Spybot S&D, Webroot's Spy Sweeper.

The background is now gone and I no longer see the system tray icon. However, my internet connection/IE function is now terrible.

Here is my HJT log:

Hi fowlermj and welcome to GeeksToGo! My name is Excal and I will be helping you.

Spysweeper

Please disable SpySweeper, as it may hinder the removal of some entries. You can re-enable it after you're clean.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >Program Options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck "automatically restore default without notification".

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe© by noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

Please download ewido security suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Thanks and Happy Holidays :)

Great job, it appears your computer is clean :tazz:

Ensure you rehide your “hidden files and folders” back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment

Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware

If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

AVG
Avast
AntiVir

The following free programs are great for prevention:

SpywareBlaster 3.4
Spywareguard
IE/Spyad

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:
(do not have more than one firewall running on your system)

Sygate
Kerio
ZoneLabs

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

Firefox
Opera

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

To help prevent future spyware installations/infections, please read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided. Also read So how did I get infected in the first place?

Well turns out things are suddenly back to where we started. For example, I opened IE and while the homepage struggled to load (msn.com) I clicked my bookmark for this post. From that point it took 140 seconds to load the page. Attempts to reply via "Add Reply" only brought up a partial page with nowhere to type after about a minute. After coming back to this post and just staring for a bit I realized it was still loading images, including the "Fast Reply" button.

It's worth mentioning that IE seems to be the only program affected too. All other apps are running smoothly with no difference in performance.

The only thing outside of IE I notice is an ultra slow internet connection for gaming. Most online games are running such high latency that I can't play at all. Secondary to total pc performance of course, but still frustrating.

All of that is exacerbated by an internet service that is far sub-par on a good day.

Also, while scrolling through my taskmanager looking for oddities, I notice that tmproxy.exe (the .exe for Trend Micro's PC-cillin) is using 110mb+. I don't remember anything quite on that level before from that program. I run 1.25gb of ram, but that's still a pretty large drain for a passive program like that, don't you think?

Download WinPFind and extract it to your C:\ folder. This will create a folder called WinPFind in the C:\ folder.
don't do anything with it yet.

boot into safe mode

Inside c:\WinPFind is a file called WinPFind.exe. Double-click on this file to launch the program. Once it is launched, click on the Start Scan button and wait for it to finish. This program will scan large amounts of files on your computer for known patterns so please be patient while it works as it can take a while, upwards to 30 minutes or more.

reboot

Please post the winpfind log

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

I only see one file, and I don't think thats the problem. If it was just geekstogo, I can let you know we been haveing problems with our site, but if its other site, i am not sure.

Can you try firefox and see if its just a problem with IE, or if its a connection issue.

Hm. As you mentioned this could be a connection issue. That's not out of the realm of possibility, considering I have one of the worst small-scale providers in the United States. It's possible that it's all just coincidental. Their service is known for being spotty and intermittent (nevermind that it's cable and costs as much as Comcast, Roadrunner, etc. and has an advertised down/up of 512/128... seriously...).

I appreciate the time taked to look at all this stuff. I'll give it a couple of days to work itself out on the connection end. Hopefully that does it :tazz:

Thanks again!
