Hey there.... Earlier this week I was downloading a screensaver on the internet when I had a SpyAxe "infection". I researched your forums and downloaded EWIDO,AD AWare, Cleanup!, SmitREm and Spy axe fix. I did not run the SPy Axe fix or the SmitRem. These stoppped the popups about spyware, but upon start up my task bar was tan and not blue, and my font was bigger. Like something changed my "VIEW". I already have Mcafee personal suite and Spy bot. I have updated my windows. Earlier this week after I ran a CleanUp! a window popped up saying some of my Windows files have been replaced with unrecognized ones and I had to put in my SP1 disk and reinstall these components.I used to get pop ups all the time, but after I ran these various programs the pop ups stoppped, i thought I had won, but my computer is very slow and unresponsive now. When I run Virus scan it comes up with nothing but SpyBOt finds a SmitFraud C. file. It can not clean them because they are still in use (memory). Here is my HIjack this log

DOWNLOAD PROGRAMS

Download smitRem.exe© by noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Download and install CleanUp! Here*NOTE* Cleanup deletes EVERYTHING out of temp/temporary folders and does not make backups.
We will use this program later.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:

Don't run it yet!


THE FIX

1. Click this link to be sure you can view hidden files.

2. Ensure you are NOT connected to the internet.

3. Reboot into safe mode.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

4. Close all browsers, windows and unneeded programs.

5. Open HiJack and do a scan.

6. Put a Check next to the following items:

7. click the Fix Checked box

8. Please remove these entries from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel(if present):

SpyAxe

9. Please remove the following folders using Windows Explorer (if present):

:\Program Files\SpyAxe

10. Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

11. Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

12. Now open and run Ewido:

• Click on scanner
• Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• During the scan when it ask if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK
• When the scan is finished, look at the bottom of the screen and click the Save report button.
• Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

13. Next go to Control Panel click appearance and themes>click Display > Desktop Tab> click Customize Desktop > Web tab > Uncheck anthing in there if present.

14. Run the program CleanUp!

15. Reboot into normal mode and please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan - Save the results from the scan!

16. Please post the Active scan log, Ewido log, smitfiles.txt log and a fresh HiJackThis log. Let me know how your computer is running.

Great job, it appears your computer is clean

If you have unhidden you “hidden files and folders”, ensure you rehide them back to the way they were.

Now that your system is Malware Free, it is important to reset your system Restore. Click Here to learn how to.

I recommend that you Defrag your computer before setting your Restore points:

Go to start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Defragmentor Make sure it set to the proper drive (default should be your main driver) and click on defragment


Might I suggest the following Free Spyware programs, if you don't already have them, for added security, you can download them at the following links. These programs work great for detection:

Ad-aware SE
Spybot S&D
Microsoft Anti-Spyware


If you are unhappy with your current antivirus and want to replace it or if you dont already have one, I suggest one of these free programs:
*Note - do not use more than one anti-virus program as it will more than likely cause conflict.

A Firewall is a must! Here are 3 good free versions:

There are other options other than Internet Explorer for a browser, which some say have better security. Two of them are:

If you decide to keep Internet Explorer, This site is a great source for tightening up security on It's settings.

Make sure that you keep your Operating System and IE updated with the latest Critical Security Updates from Microsoft...they usually come out once a month, on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.

Included in those updates is Windows XP Service Pack 2. Click Here
Since you're junkware free, the time to get it is NOW. Service Pack 2 is a MAJOR upgrade for XP. It adds numerous security and software patches, as well as new features and functionality. You will also be adding another layer of protection against future threats.

Be sure and give the Temp folders a cleaning out now and then as well, Make sure after you clean your Temp files to empty out your Recycle bin as well.
For ease use the following program:

Cleanup
Run "Cleanup" and when it has finished, Reboot

Hey Excal!!
I know I said my computer was fine, but last night I did a SpyBot run and that SMITFRAUDC. thing was still there and it said it was using memeory and could not be fixed. What do I do? Also, Was part of our fix in the Hijackthis step to keep Quicktime from running on startup? I always turn off that pesky thing anyway b/c it is another process running that might slow down my computer. well, like the first couple times I started my computer after we fixed it, the logo was gone from my taskbar. It is back again. I don't want it to run on startup. Here is the spybot log

Right-Click HERE and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.
